I thought it best not to be pedantic but for the record, Reggie North had us playing cricket at St Columbs circa 1974 so it certainly wasn't introduced in 2000 and anything. Mr North, a maths teacher also played at Waterside CC and my lasting memory was that I never had maths homework on a Wednesday night as he and I batted 5 and 6 in the midweek team with two other students, including my brother in the side. True, we never participated in any inter-schools competition but nevertheless, now that you have blown open this can of worms I will wear my veil of shame.....

RE This weeks Outside Edge

Cricket was actually introduced in St. Columbs by Father Colm O'Doherty in 2001 and we participated in the Schools Cup until 2004 or 05?

If my memory serves me correctly it was made up up Ardmore, Strabane and Burndennett men.

We were never as popular with the ladies as the GAA or Soccer boys(possibly to do with our looks than the sport) but by God we tried!

In fairness the school were more than accommodating - they actually cut a wicket on St. Johns GAA pitch at the school for us which wasn't the most popular of decisions!

Once we had all left, the sport disappeared from the after-sport activities fairly quickly only to be re-introduced by Brian Allen the year he started as CDO.

The highlight of the season was an indoor kwik cricket tournament held in Lumen Christi between Lumen, St Columb's and St Brigid's and St Patrick's Claudy. I believe Big Boyd Rankin and William Porterfield were on hand to present the trophy.

Just to make the North West community aware cricket coaching has continued in St Columb's, St Patrick's Claudy and Ardmore Primary Schools with Philip Patterson taking up the reigns.

This has only been possible due to the Bob Kerr Memorial fund which has given us funding every year (this year included)

We owe a big debt of thanks to Hope Kerr for her continuing support. I'm sure Brian will be down at the schools once again to lend advice and to keep an eye on young Phil!

I agree with the desire to retain Irish players to play for Ireland. However, I respect the aspiration of exceptional players such as Eoin Morgan to strive for the pinnacle of the sport which is Test Cricket; and, since Ireland is unlikely to field a Test side until perhaps 2020 - a three- or four-day structure must be put in place first - such players (and there are only a very few in that 'super' class) will continue to move to a Test-playing nation, generally England.

I do not agree, as this article seems to suggest, that such players chase the goal of Test cricket primarily for the money. I think it is a natural desire on the part of any outstanding sportsman to aim for the top of his sport, purely for his personal satisfaction.

John Mooney to trial for Sussex

Congratulations to John Mooney and hopefully he can get some reward for all the effort he has put in over the years and also the brilliant wholehearted performances he puts in every time he takes the field for Ireland and North County.

On the down side, If he has to come off the North County starring list it looks like they will be very much weakened. With injuries and the lack of a pro they could be struggling. The team they put out in the BKIS on Saturday was a long way away from what we usually see from North County in Ireland's Premier Competition, a mixture of firsts seconds and thirds. It was a good performance from them to actually win the match, particularly after the start they got.

The BKISC has grown into a fantastic competition, can we have stats for attendances at all the games from now on, also I would also like to see the final stages televised. are there are plans that Cricketireland can announce in this direction?

We know the best Team wins the BKISC and are deserved Champions but what about expanding the format by allowing the two Finalists to play each other home and away, there's a thought!

Slightly surprised and confused that an IPL franchaise approached CI to play a tour match, the IPL players are only contracted for the duration of the tournament in India and then return to their respective countries and clubs after the tournament is finished.
If a Franchaise toured it would not contain most of the star foreign players.

Can we have a regular up date on John's progress in Sussex?

Mark,

You are correct. We need more development officers to develop the game at grassroots level. But they cost money. The development officers around Dublin are primarily paid for by the LCU clubs and the local county councils

Cricket Ireland has lots of money but it is spending it on the elite game, player contracts, international tournaments, managers etc in the belief that success at international level will generate an increased interest in the game. But they have failed to come to terms with the reality that much of Ireland does not have any cricket facilities to accommodate those new cricket fans.

The new cricket converts need support to set up new clubs and existing clubs need support to improve their facilities and it should be coming from Cricket Ireland.
