Paul Stirling - although it may have got lost in the Battle of Fingal, I'd like to pass on my congratulations to Paul Stirling on a quite wonderful knock of 177. He's a serious talent. Why didn't Middlesex use him more this year? I suppose the England scouts will be poaching him soon!!
Well bowled Albert van der Merwe - has he now overtaken george Dockrell on the plane to the 2011 World Cup - big trip coming up to Zimbabwe - few World Cup slots still to be filled I expect?
In my opinion certs are Johnston, Porterfield, Stirling, Wilson, O Brien x 2, Joyce, Rankin, Mooney, White, Cusack.
That leaves 4 slots to be filled with the contenders being - Botha, Dockrell, Van Der Merwe, West, Jones, McCann, Poynter, Eaglestone and Eastwood.
I'm assuming Marshall will be refused dispensation by ICC and Ed will get in. I'd take george, Albert and Andre - that leaves one slot. Depending on balance, it would have to be a med/quick bowler, given Boyd's Darren Anderton like record. Allan eastwood for me, although Phil Simmons keeps opting to take Phil Eaglestone on tours - God knows why, as he hardly ever plays!
Interesting selection times ahead!

Bob Kerr Irish Senior Cup Final - looking forward to what should be a good contest. Have a feeling that railway have just the bit more experience and class where it matters. Merrion though have a good track record against them. Let's hope for a good advertisement for Irish cricket.

Any chance the North Dublin war can stop and have a bit of positive discussion for a change? All this bitching is getting tiresome.
Ed's Note: Agree entirely Stephen - the rest of the week is good news only.

It’s good to see that you are looking ahead to the 2011 season and are trying to do the work of the Leinster Cricket Union and God knows they need help lots of help. I would like to point out that we have only a handful of clubs and players playing cricket in Leinster about the same as a small town in England (I know I have said this before) and they play small time cricket and enjoy it, we on the other hand play international (style) cricket with poor cricketers, very poor cricketers as a whole (not referring to The International Team). We have more regulations than the ICC and we are talking of bringing Duckworth/Lewis into more Divisions. Now you can go around with your head up your rear end and thing that all of this tripe is good for the game and live in cloud cuckoo land but it is not necessary for such small time cricket to be so over regulated.
So let’s get down to brass tacks and look at what’s wrong instead of adding to the mess. If you want umpires and scorer for every club game you need to do some sums, if you have eight teams and your first and seconds are lucky to have LCUSA umpires (stop, I can hear you snigger) then you need to look after six teams, so one team is cut (now five) and you sort out your umpires and scorers. Then you cut the Divisions by about four and make them bigger. Then you have each bowler bowl not more than 15 over in the 50/45 over games and not more than 12 in the lesser over games (improving both batting and bowling). The fielding captain be allowed set his/her field within The Laws of Cricket. No circles/ arc’s, stationary people (one would say there are too many anyway), this is only window dressing for big cricket and get on with the lovely game of cricket and for a bit of fun cricket have your 20/20 style cricket. Mark my words you will still have your same half a dozen people watching.
While Cricket Ireland keep within their little circle and don't get out like RFU, IFA and GAA and have big over-the-top young people coaching sessions with the big names of the cricket world coming here with our own big international players and helping out to improve the image of cricket in the whole of cricket we will be forever sucking the hind tit of cricket, one day wonders are not just good enought.

There's no problem at the moment, as long as you don't consider a league where half of the teams are biased against, a problem.
With the old league system, the fact that 2nd XI's were allowed to play on a different day, selecting half their 1st XIs in the process didn't really matter. No one could get promoted, and every 20 years or so, a 1st XI would be elected into the Senior ranks and everyone was happy. Now however we have a merit based system, where 2nd XI's of clubs such as Leinster, The Hills, North County, Pembroke, Railway Union take advantage of a bias in the system towards them, disadvantaging clubs like Civil Service, Trinity, Laois, Balbriggan, Old Belvedere etc.
If we want to keep a system that promises to make the bigger clubs more successful, concentrating cricket in Leinster in a few small areas then so be it. If we want cricket to grow, and encourage growth outside a few hotspots, then change is needed. Yes, Leinster CC would be one of the clubs to suffer (or play on a level playing field as it's also known), but I'd prefer an honest system to the one that we have now.
In the same way that posters on here routinely blame their union (whether LCU, NCU or NWCU (MCU seem not to get any criticism!)), even though it's the clubs who ARE the union, everyone also seems to treat the umpires as some distinct entity far removed from the cricket we play every week. The clubs need the umpires, but by and large don't want to worry about the fact that there aren't enough of them.
I simply propose if clubs want to play "serious" cricket, ie top three divisions, they should also be serious about all aspects of their club outside of playing, and that includes the provision of umpires. Many clubs already do this, so it wouldn't be a problem. It is odd though that those clubs who do provide umpires get no credit for it in anyway. So some clubs would have to organise some umpires, but most wouldn't. I'm quite sure Alan Tuffrey would gladly accommodate all new recruits and have them ready for duty by next season .
Finally, it is probable that all clubs who are only interested in their self interest, fail to look at the wider picture, and want to keep a system where the leagues are biased in their favour would vote against this. I'm not sure what that says about the future of cricket development in Leinster

Ref: Martin Russell "and like others who came to us they asked, were directed by others or asked by other clubs if it was ok for certain people to play."
None of the following were your official professional, and moved from other Irish clubs, Michael Lax, Gavin Morgan, Bryn Thomas, Ian O'Herlihy,Michael O'Herlihy, Naz Shoukat, Jeremy Bray, Albert Van Der Merwe, T. Muphy, M.Baumgart. D. Calder, P. O'Donnell, M. Kumar (13 since 2003)
I'm sure I have also missed a few of the additions to the Hills 1st team squad over the last number of years.
I am not saying that all of these players were paid, or poached. But I would be very suprised if NONE of these players were approached by your club (or members) or enticed into coming.
Will Dwyer: I love your passion and pride in Albert's performance, I take some of the same pride when I see people i know doing well. I would take nothing away from you or your club (CYM isnt it, just kidding), but I think some members of your club bring this on themselves by claiming to be "whiter than white". If your members (not you) were a little more honest or in touch with reality, people wouldnt be so quick to have a go.
