This competition bordered on the farcical as Limerick were disqualified in controversial circumstances. On the credit side, the final between holders County Kerry and UCC was a thriller. Chasing County Kerry's 161 for seven of which New Zealander Mark Ambridge made 52, UCC reached the final over needing ten to win with two wickets remaining. Three runs came from the first two deliveries but skipper Ger McDonnell kept his head and took two wickets with the next three balls to end the match with five runs to spare,
