Donemana go clear at the top of Section I
Barry Chambers, 12 June 2001 Donemana moved two points clear at the top of the table with a convincing win over Tyrone neighbours Fox Lodge. Batting first Fox Lodge had no answer to the strong Donemana bowling attack as both Junior McBrine and Johnny Thompson picked up 3 wickets apiece. There were also two wickets each for James McBrine and Gary Neely as Fox Lodge were dismissed for 96. Pakistan professional Zahid Javed (right) top scored for the home side with 24. In reply Donemana had little difficulty in passing the total with Roy McBrine scoring 31 and young William Porterfield also chipping in. This win will give Donemana a big boost as they prepare for their big two cup games over the weekend. Their opponents on Saturday Strabane had a disappointing result against their great rivals Bready going down by 61 runs. Bready batted first and once again their professional Wian Smit was the main stay of their batting display. He scored 91 not out and is continuing the magnificent form he showed last season. The man is truly a run machine. Davy Lecky contributed an undefeated 28 as Bready posted a very gettable 164 for 3. However this target proved to be beyond the reach of Strabane as they fell for only 103 in the face of some tight bowling and fielding which has been the hallmarks of their side over the past few years. The opening attack of Geoffrey McConnell and Roly Black each captured 2 wickets apiece while Trevor Hamilton bowled his overs very economically taking 1 wicket for 17. However it was occasional bowler Davy lecky who was the real hero taking 4 wickets for 20. This win leaves Bready well positioned to make a serious title challenge, and if Smit continues in the same vein who knows what could happen for the Magheramason men. Brigade are also moving into a position to challenge the leaders after a comfortable win over Drummond. Batting first Brigade scored 185 for 3 with pro Wasti top scoring with 70. However Drummond have only themselves to blame as they spilled straightforward catches twice to dismiss him before he had reached double figures. He struck 7 fours and 1 six in his knock before he was dismissed by the spin of the impressive Simon Dunn. All the Brigade batsmen reached double figures with Gordon Cooke striking an impressive 42 not out which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. In their innings Drummond got off to a terrible start when Chris Moore was brilliantly caught in the gully by Wasti off the bowling of Graeme Moore who was returning from an injury sustained in the opening match of the season. When Mark Simpson demolished the stumps of Wasim Haider the game was up for Drummond, and despite a few lusty blows from Paul Montgomery who top scored with 22, the result was never in doubt. They were eventually dismissed for 93 with two wickets apiece for Wasti, Moore, Simpson and Cooke.
