One of the two grounds in Ireland to be approved to host official ODIs, Clontarf was first used for an Irish international in 1964 when Ireland played the MCC here in a first-class match. India were the first Test team to play here in 1967.

The ground hosted its first women's ODI in 1990, between Ireland and England, and in 1997 was home to Ireland's first win over a county side in a competitive match, when they beat Middlesex in the Benson and Hedges Cup.

The first ODI on the ground was played in 1999 when Bangladesh played the West Indies in the World Cup. Ireland first played a ODI here in 2007, playing the West Indies as part of a Quadrangular series also involving the Netherlands and Scotland, who also played the West Indies at the venue. The ground also hosted the final of the 2005 ICC Trophy, with Scotland beating Ireland.

Situated in Stormont, the Civil Service Cricket Club ground was opened in the 1940s, but it wasn't until the late 90s that international cricket came here, the first such match being a women's ODI between Ireland and South Africa.

Two matches in the 2002 European Championship were played here, and in 2003/2004 it played host to two of Ireland's victories over test playing nations, a ten wicket drubbing of Zimbabwe in 2003 (umpired by CricketEurope's own John Boomer) and a six wicket win over the West Indies in 2004.

ODI cricket came here in 2006 when Ireland played their first ODI, against England. The ground was busy in 2007, with ODIs for Ireland against India, South Africa, the Netherlands and Scotland. Three ODIs between India and South Africa were also played here. In August, the first first-class match on the ground took place, an Intercontinental Cup match between Ireland and Scotland.
