Of the grounds being used for the tournament, the Gymkhana Club undoubtedly has the longest history of the three having first being used for international cricket back in 1954 when Tanganyika played Kenya. It was often Tanganyika/Tanzania's home ground for their international matches in the 1950s and 1960s, with Kenya and Uganda being the most frequent visitors. Teams from further afield also came, with a South Africa Non-European team captained by Basil D'Oliveria coming in 1958, the MCC in 1957, 1963 and 1974 and Pakistan International Airlines in 1964. amongst others. The biggest match played on the ground though is probably Tanzania's match against India in 1967. The three-day contest ended in a draw with Bhagwat Chandrasekhar starring with 8/25 in the Tanzanian first innings. Earlier, Vasant Tapu had taken four wickets in the Indian first innings, three of them for ducks. |
