A Timeline of Hong Kong Cricket

1841 The first recorded match in Hong Kong takes place.
1851 The Hong Kong Cricket Club is formed.
1866 Hong Kong's first match, an innings win against Shanghai in the first of the interport matches.
1890 Hong Kong played the Straits Settlements for the first time, winning both matches, the first by an innings.
1891 Hong Kong played Ceylon for the first time, losing by ten wickets in Singapore.
1892 The SS Bokhara, carrying the Hong Kong team back from Shanghai, where they had lost by 157 runs, sank in a typhoon. 125 lives were lost, including 11 of the 13 Hong Kong players on the tour.
1897 Hong Kong's interport matches resume after a five year break. Playing at home, they lost to the Straits Settlements by an innings, but beat Shanghai by 1 wicket. A combined Hong Kong/Shanghai side also lost to the Straits Settlements by an innings.
1920 Hong Kong played Malaya for the first time, losing by 35 runs.
1926 Hong Kong played the Federated Malay States for the first time, losing by an innings.
1948 The last game against Shanghai took place.
1957 First match between Hong Kong and Singapore ended in a draw.
1965 Worcestershire toured Hong Kong, playing once against the national side.
First match between Hong Kong and Malaysia ended in a draw in Kuala Lumpur.
1966 The MCC visited Hong Kong, beating the national side by 74 runs.
1969 The Hong Kong Cricket Association became an associate member of the ICC.
1970 The MCC visited again, drawing against the national side.
1971 Hong Kong toured Ceylon, losing their match against the Ceylon Board President's XI.
1980 Papua New Guinea toured Hong Kong, drawing the two-match one-day series.
1982 Hong Kong, featuring future England player Dermot Reeve, play in the ICC Trophy for the first time. They fail to go past the first round.
1984 Hong Kong are runners-up to Bangladesh in the first South East Asian tournament.
1986 Hong Kong again failed to progress beyond the first round in the ICC Trophy.
1987 The final Interport match saw Hong Kong beat Singapore by 149 runs.
1988 Australia played in Hong Kong, beating a Hong Kong Cricket Association team by 179 runs. D Paull took 6/124 (from 14.1 overs) in the Australian innings.
Hong Kong are again runners-up to Bangladesh in the South East Asian tournament.
1990 Hong Kong reached the plate round in the ICC Trophy.
Hong Kong played Thailand for the first time in the first Volvo Cup. The two-day match in Bangkok was drawn.
1991 Former Hong Kong player Dermot Reeve made his ODI debut for England. He made his Test debut the following year.
Hong Kong won the first Tuanku Ja'afar Cup.
1992 The Hong Kong Sixes took place for the first time. It is now the world's premier sixes tournament.
Hong Kong are again runners-up to Bangladesh in the South East Asian tournament.
The Volvo Cup, now a one-day tournament, sees Hong Kong finish as runners-up to Thailand.
Hong Kong retained the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup.
1993 Bangladesh toured Hong Kong, winning all three matches against the national side.
Hong Kong won the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup for the third consecutive year.
1994 Hong Kong reached the second round of the ICC Trophy.
1995 Hong Kong toured Bangladesh, losing both matches against the national side.
1996 Hong Kong take part in the first ACC Trophy, failing to go past the first round.
Hong Kong won the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup for the fourth time.
1997 Hong Kong returns to Chinese control, but Hong Kong has continued to play in international cricket in its own right.
Hong Kong finished eighth in the ICC Trophy, their best result in the tournament.
1998 Hong Kong reached the semi-finals of the ACC Trophy, losing to Malaysia.
Hong Kong won the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup for the fifth time.
1999 Hong Kong retained the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup.
2000 Hong Kong were runners-up in the ACC Trophy, thus qualifying for the next Asia Cup.
New Zealand toured Hong Kong.
2001 Hong Kong again failed to progress beyond the first round in the ICC Trophy.
The MCC toured Hong Kong. As part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Hong Kong Cricket Club, they took part in a triangular tournament also involving the Melbourne Cricket Club. The MCC won the tournament.
Hong Kong won the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup for the seventh time.
2002 Hong Kong lost to the UAE in the semi-finals of the ACC Trophy.
Hong Kong retained the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup.
2003 Hong Kong won the Tuanku Ja'afar Cup for the third consecutive year. It was their ninth and last title overall.
2004 Hong Kong played their first ODIs, losing to Bangladesh and Pakistan in the first round of the Asia Cup.
Hong Kong failed to progress beyond the first round of the ACC Trophy, thus missing out on qualification for the 2005 ICC Trophy.
Hong Kong were runners-up to Malaysia in the last Tuanku Ja'afar Cup to date.
2005 Hong Kong lost to the UAE in the final of the 2004 ACC Fast Track Countries tournament.
Hong Kong played first-class cricket for the first time, losing to the UAE and drawing with Nepal in the Intercontinental Cup.
Hong Kong finished last in the ACC Fast Track Countries tournament.
2006 Hong Kong were again runners-up to the UAE in the ACC Trophy.
Hong Kong finished fourth in the ACC Premier League.
Hong Kong's women make their international debut on a tour of Pakistan. They lost all three matches.
2007 Hong Kong finished fifth in Division 3 of the World Cricket League in Darwin.
Hong Kong played in the first ACC Twenty20 Cup in Kuwait. They finished fourth in their group and failed to reach the semi-finals.
Hong Kong's women play twice against China. They beat them by ten wickets in Shenzhen and also won the return match in Kowloon a fortnight later, this time by 115 runs.
Hong Kong's women reached the semi-finals of the ACC Women's Tournament where they lost to eventual winners Bangladesh.
2008 Hong Kong's women toured Bangladesh, losing all four matches against the national side.
Warming up for the Asia Cup, Hong Kong toured Pakistan. They won one of their five matches Ð against Punjab University.
Hong Kong played in the Asia Cup again, losing to India and Pakistan in the first round.
Hong Kong won the ACC Trophy, beating the UAE in the final.
Hong Kong are runners-up to Afghanistan in Division 4 of the World Cricket League in Tanzania, gaining promotion to Division 3.
2009 Hong Kong finish fourth in Division Three of the World Cricket League in Argentina.
At the Hong Kong Sixes, in a remarkable run, Hong Kong beat South Africa twice, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka and England to reach the final, where they lose to South Africa. Hong Kong's Irfan Ahmed was named player of the tournament.
Hong Kong's women win the ACC Women's Twenty20, beating Thailand in the final.
Hong Kong finish tenth in the ACC Twenty20. Their only win in the tournament came against Hong Kong.
2010 Australia win the Hong Kong Sixes, beating Pakistan in the final. Hong Kong were runners-up to New Zealand in the plate competition, losing to New Zealand in the final. They beat England earlier in the tournament, and also beat China by one run in a non-tournament match.
Hong Kong Under-19s play in their first World Cup, finishing 14th.
Hong Kong finish third in the ACC Trophy.
At the Asian Games cricket tournaments, Hong Kong's men are eliminated in the quarter finals by Afghanistan, whilst the women are knocked out in the first round after defeats to Bangladesh and Nepal.

2011 Hong Kong host and win Division Three of the World Cricket League, beating Papua New Guinea in the final and gaining promotion to Division Two.
