From a Linlithgow family, he was educated in Kent. He returned to win Under 16 and Under 19 caps as a batsman who bowled a bit of medium pace, but after wintering in South Africa under the guidance of Omar Henry he came back to continue his career at West Lothian County Cricket Club as a genuine pace bowler with a very fast arm. Made his full debut for Scotland in 1993 and joined Yorkshire in 1994, making his debut that year and winning his county cap in 1998. Leading Scottish batsman in 1999 World Cup, subsequently selected for England tour to South Africa 1999/2000 (1 Test Match). Signed for Durham 2004-05. Played in Six Nations Challenge, Inter-Continental Cup 2004 scoring 115 against Canada in winning final, and was also a member of the 2005 ICC Trophy winning side in Ireland.
