Switzerland win low-scoring thriller
SWITZERLAND won a low-scoring thriller against Finland with Shanawaz Muhammad their hero, winning the match with his second six.
After bowling out the Finns for 113, victory should have a formality for Switzerland and although they lost four wickets in the first eight overs, a 62 runs partnership between Julian Wessel and Sanjeevan Theaver, who both scored 31, got them to within 30 runs of their target.
But both were out for the addition of just nine runs and when two more wickets fell in quick succession, the second to Mahdu Bhandari, giving him four wickets, they were 99 for eight and it was game on.
Shanawaz eased the tension with a six and in company with Rob Campbell at the other end who needed to hit only two runs, from two balls, the No 9 batsman cleared the boundary to spark an invasion of the field by his team-mates, celebrating their first win of the tournament.
In each innings only three players reached double figures as the ball dominated on Happy Valley 2. Shabir Sheerzad scored 17 of the second wicket stand of 24 as Michael Shaw dug in at the other end. Shaw faced 54 balls for his nine runs but he was leg before in the 22nd over to leave the Finns 38 for five.
A partnership of 53 between Ekhpelwak Kuchey and Bilal Khan in just nine overs turned the innings on its head but when Khan was out for 23, off 28 balls and Kuchey followed three overs later for 22, the tail hung around for 10 overs but could manage only another 16 runs. Sajid Ullah took three for 19 and Azeem Nazir wrapped up the innings to finish with two for 14 from eight overs.
