Who had the greatest influence on your career?
Mike Stanger. He was the reason I got selected for Scotland at U15 level. He also gave me my first representative captaincy and has provided the environment for many good cricketers from the West of Scotland to develop through the coaching structure, organisation of matches and experiences such as our tour to India in 1995.
What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To captain Scotland to a victory in a World Cup match and for us to achieve a top 10 world ODI ranking
What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
There have been many both good and bad. Being asked to captain my country, winning our first NCL game at Durham in 2003, chasing 179 in 15 overs against Somerset, beating Lancashire at Old Trafford and winning the ICC Trophy are probably top of the pile
What was your worst cricketing moment?
Not being selected for the 1999 World Cup and then the 2001 ICC Trophy defeat to Namibia when we threw away a match that would have secured qualification for the 2003 World Cup
What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Being asked by the media if I thought we were promotion contenders 5 games into our debut NCL season having been told by some in the media before the season that we were probably not going to win a match!
Who is your best friend in Scottish Cricket and why?
We have a great bunch of guys in the National team at the moment and I wouldn’t want to single anyone out or I will be accused of favouritism!! Outside of the current squad it is probably Tony Judd.
Who is your favourite Scottish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Bruce Patterson was one of the few Scottish players of his era who believed he was good enough to take on professional opposition. Currently Ryan Watson is the player who makes things happen most often for us in terms of match winning contributions.
Which is your favourite Scottish cricket ground, and why?
Hamilton Crescent is the best cricket arena in the country closely followed by Glen Park, Greenock.
Who is the best young Scottish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Calum MacLeod: has the attitude and ability to go far.
What do you think of overseas professionals in Scottish club cricket?
It depends what they bring to the party. If they do development work and bring on the young players in their club then fantastic. Otherwise we need to establish a middle tier of Scottish Cricket from where we pick the national team and encourage clubs to employ development officers rather than hired assasins to ensure the future health of Scottish cricket at both club and national level.
Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
If there is a level of competition in between club and international cricket then YES to ensure as many players get an opportunity as possible. If as is currently the case we are selecting the national team from club cricket then NO as we need the batsmen to be challenged more rather than getting easy runs against 4th or 5th change club bowlers.
What are your main complaints about Scottish cricket?
More priority should be given to spending money on facilities and junior development rather than attempting to bring in players who will win leagues or secure promotion in the short term but leave no legacy.
How would you set about improving the standard of Scottish cricket?
More matches for the best players (particularly young players) against tough opposition. More investment in facilities and youth development to increase the numbers and quality of player coming into the game.
How would you set about making Scottish cricket more popular?
Make sure the team keeps winning and continue to expand the youth development programmes to get more kids playing and keep the clubs healthy.
Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
Always had a soft spot for the West Indies because Curtly Ambrose was my favourite cricketer but not concerned with any team bar Scotland now
Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Australia, Malaysia, Canada, UAE, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Holland
Which was your favourite, and why?
Australia. They have such a great sporting culture where kids get to experience so many different sports and it is accepted that participation and investment in sport is very much a part of life.
Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
Rahul Dravid. A bit biased maybe but he is such a magnificent player and such a fantastic person as well despite the pressure he must be under in such a cricket mad country
