Who had the greatest influence on your career?
A guy by the name of Warwick Adlam. He helped me develop into the bowler and person I am now. We opened the bowling together for 7 seasons in first grade and he taught me a lot about life and cricket. My wife and family (especially mum), without them I would not have achieved what I have today.
What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
It was to wear the baggy green … I did not achieve that but next best is the baggy blue of NSW. To keep Ireland the top Associate country and finally to be the photo of the day on the CricketEurope website!
What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
I have three. My debut for NSW, playing with some of the legends of Australian cricket - Mark Taylor, David Boon. Winning the Intercontinental Cup in Namibia and any cup win with the Tarf.
What was your worst cricketing moment?
Breaking my arm on debut - Nothing more on that point. Playing in the last game at Kimmage in 98 (Carlisle CC) they were good years.
What is your funniest cricketing moment?
There have been so many. From streakers in club cricket in Sydney, to robbers being chased by police across cricket grounds in Nth London in 93. I would have to say it was playing for Carlisle in 95 All-Ireland comp vs. Bangor away. We had no Jason, Greg or Rodney Molins, Mark Cohen etc. The average team was 45 and some how we won nine down with Dr John Simons and Harold Solomons at the wicket to secure victory. It was achieved with a French cut for two. UNBELIEVABLE.
Who is your best friend in Irish Cricket and why?
If I had to answer this, it would be Jeremy Bray. We have played with and against each other since we were 12; we room together when playing for Nth Leinster and Ireland. Our wives get on very well also – which helps. This was before he left for the NW.
Who is your favourite Irish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Who is your favourite Irish cricketer (past and present), and why?
You must remember I have only been around for 10 years, but here goes. Past - I would say Angus Dunlop or Alan Lewis. Angus is one bloke that had it over me all the time. I think I got him out twice in about ten attempts, a real competitor and leader. Also a quality bloke off the field. I would have loved to have played against Lewi in the early 90's at his peak; he could bat, bowl, field and direct his team around the park - a true champion. I do not really know many of the legends up North so I cannot comment. Present - Without any doubt it would be Andre Botha, he is class and just keeps on performing year after year. These three guys you would have in the trenches with you 10 times out of 10.
Which is your favourite Irish cricket ground, and why?
I would have said Kimmage (Carlisle CC) but it is a car park now. Clontarf is my home ground and there is none better on a hot summer's day. Civil service is becoming a quality ground also.
Who is the best young Irish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
When I first came ten years ago, I said Ed Joyce was going to be a great player - not far wrong. Eoin Morgan is quality as well and could even be better than Ed at this age. Nevertheless, the one that stands out for me is Greg Thompson. For a person his age to bowl with the control, flight, drift and turn he gets is unbelievable. With the right guidance, he could be something very special.
Are you in favour of an All Ireland League?
I do not really have an opinion on this. I think we need to structure the inter-pros cricket a lot better and make it more crowd friendly. That might be a start.
What do you think of overseas professionals in Irish club cricket?
I think it is good if they are used to develop cricket in their areas.
Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes.
What are your main complaints about Irish cricket?
Lack of exposure, lack of professionalism - having said this Adi has brought the Irish squad to a new level. When I say lack of professionalism, I mean outside the team. Lack of media coverage in the South.
How would you set about improving the standard of Irish cricket?
Getting more senior players involved in development. Something like Scotland has, they have four senior team players assigned to one area and they develop that area, this is where it starts - grass roots.
How would you set about making Irish cricket more popular?
Same as above, make it crowd friendly.
Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
Anyone beating England. No, it would have to be Australia - I played with and against a lot of them and they are friends of mine.
Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
England, Wales, Scotland, Holland, New Zealand, Namibia and Australia obviously!
Which was your favourite, and why?
Ireland is number one - the people are so nice and welcoming.
Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
I have three. Malcolm Marshall - anyone that can bowl at 90mph and swing it both ways is a magician and his numbers speak for themselves. Desmond Haynes he was just top drawer and Warwick Adlam - The best bald fast bowler to a left handed batsmen in the world, just ask Niall O'Brien.
Who is your favourite English cricketer, and why?
NONE. I played club cricket with Andrew Strauss in Sydney and to see him do so well is great.
