Cricketing Career

Who had the greatest influence on your career?
Father. He played for Furness CC, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria and we had a newsagents over the road from the ground.

What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To score a '100' in St. Kitts while the old man's watching and in doing so help Scotland to win a game at the 2007 World Cup.

Steve KnoxWhat is your most memorable cricketing moment?
Scoring 178 not out for Maroochydore CC, in the Grand Final of the Sunshine Coast Competition, in Queensland, Australia in 1995/96. I finally felt like a proper cricketer.

What was your worst cricketing moment?
Being dismissed for 0 in the 2nd innings of my first-class debut v Holland at Aberdeen in 2004. I was in terrible nick and only made 6 in the first innings. Not the start I'd been hoping for.

What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Hard to pick one as there've been so many. Last tour game in Cape Town v Cape Town CC, in March 1998. I'm opening the batting with David Shaw, ex-Stoneywood-Dyce pro and a South African who'd joined us for a few days to catch up with a few of the guys. First ball of the innings, opening bowler's run-up and pretended to bowl the ball, Dave's in on the joke and has played and missed while making a clicking noise, the keeper who had the ball all along has thrown it up and appealed along with all the slips and the umpire's put his finger up as Dave's walking off.

Who is your best friend in Scottish Cricket and why?
Simon Smith aka Smudger. He loves the game, has got a great sense of humour, and his glass is always half-full. Scottish Cricket

Who is your favourite Scottish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Bruce Patterson. For his single-mindedness, determination, and belief in his own ability. He's been successful for so long as an opening batsman in Scotland playing on some pretty average wickets and has made runs against quality opposition.

Which is your favourite Scottish cricket ground, and why?
With 4,000 people in: Portgower Place, great wicket and an awesome atmosphere. With 400 people in and the sun shining: Glenpark, Greenock, for the same reasons.

Who is the best young Scottish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Calum MacLeod.

What do you think of overseas professionals in Scottish club cricket?
I think they're essential. Young players can learn so much from them both on and off the field. The key is you've gotta get the right one.

Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes. They should only be able to hold the ball cross seam and bowl short with no fielders on the legside boundary.

What are your main complaints about Scottish cricket?
Starting at 1pm in the league on a Saturday. Let's make it 12 and then everyone can have a Saturday night.

How would you set about improving the standard of Scottish cricket?
Long term - we've got to get the game into every school in Scotland. Short term - make the Scottish Cricket Pyramid narrower at the top - 3 teams playing all forms of the game.

How would you set about making Scottish cricket more popular?
Play 20/20 against the best countries in the big cities in the big stadia and get the TV cameras there. If we'd have played the Aussies at Murrayfield in a 20/20 last year we'd have sold 30,000 tickets.

Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
Don't support any but follow them all.

Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Holland; South Africa; Australia; New Zealand.

South Africa. We were on a 3 week pre-season tour with Stoneywood-Dyce in 1998. The trip was extremely sociable, the weather was absolutely beautiful and the scenery was world class. In addition I couldn't spend the money I'd taken with me and I really tried.
