Cricketing Career

Who has had the greatest influence on your career?
Dad can talk the best game in the world, and could play a pretty decent one in his day, too. The commitment my folks have put into my career rivals my own.

What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To play for the National Team at the highest level for as long as possible.

What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
Earning my first cap. A drizzly day at Hove, match abandoned after 10 overs. The stuff of dreams!

What was your worst cricketing moment?
Missing the whole of 2005 through injury.

What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Keeping up to the wickets, I went down leg side to gather a wayward delivery and caught the ball squarely in the crown jewels, and had to spend the rest of the day in the dressing room ‘icing the area' with legs up in the air. My teammates, opponents, spectators and even the umpires seemed to find it the funniest thing that had ever happened. I can see their point now, but certainly didn't at the time!

Who is your best friend in Scottish Cricket and why?
I've been very fortunate to be part of two great sets of people - Grange CC and the National Team. I've had some memorable times with both these groups of friends.

Scottish Cricket

Who is your favourite Scottish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Officer Colin Smith of the Grampian Police Force, Wicketkeeping Division. Having to keep the peace as well as the wickets is no easy task, but Floppy sets a great example by his dedication to the cricketing cause. As well as his twin commitments to “Protect and Stump”, the great man is also inventor of the Katchet - not a device for apprehending criminals, but a cricket training aid which has earned rave reviews worldwide.

Which is your favourite Scottish cricket ground, and why?
Portgower Place, Stockbridge. The Home of Cricket.

Who is the best young Scottish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Gordon Goudie. He has all the credentials to enjoy great success in the game.

What do you think of overseas professionals in Scottish club cricket?
There are as many good examples as poor ones. As long as overseas players help their club's long-term sustainability by coaching junior and senior players, in addition to their performances on the field, then there is definitely a place for them in Scottish cricket. Although the amount of money in our game is on the increase, there's still not enough around to let a massive chunk of it disappear on a plane every September if there isn't a positive legacy left behind. That said, there are many examples of overseas players who have been excellent imports to our shores, doing wonders for their club in particular and the game in general. Many overseas players set a good example to aspiring youngsters and raise the standard of their teammates' play. We must also be wary of having our cake and eating it - if we want our players to have opportunities to improve their game by playing overseas, then we must be willing to welcome imports to our own domestic scene.

Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes. Bringing the bowling allocation down from 15 overs to ten will force clubs to use more bowlers. While in the short term we may see some higher totals, young bowlers will develop quicker than they would have done under the previous rules, when their opportunities were more limited.

What are your main complaints about Scottish cricket?
The weather! And perhaps clubs spending too much cash on hiring mercenaries at the expense of facilities and youth development.

How would you set about improving the standard of Scottish cricket?
Get a strong coaching structure in place to nurture our young talent and reduce the need for our best players to go elsewhere to develop their game. We're already well on the way towards this ideal scenario.

How would you set about making Scottish cricket more popular?
We could make domestic cricket more of a spectacle by introducing coloured clothing to the Premier Division.

International Cricket

Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
I watch all Test cricket on the telly, and as a member of MCC, I go along to the Lord's Test each year with the family. My Dad's English.

Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Ireland twice (Belfast for the 2003 Euros and Dublin for the 2004 ICC Intercontinental Cup) and Australia twice (Tasmania in 2001/2 and Queensland in 2004/5).

Which was your favourite, and why?
It's a close call, as we won the Euros in Belfast, won the Intercontinental in thrilling fashion in Dublin, and my two trips to Australia have provided countless great times. The progress I made technically, physically and mentally while attending the academy in Brisbane probably gives Queensland the edge.

Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
Sachin Tendulkar, humble genius. Justin Langer, nails.

Who is your favourite English cricketer, and why?
Steve Harmison. Panned for failing to live up to expectations and struggling with homesickness, he now leads the England attack from the front. When his rhythm's right, it's a joy to watch him bowl.
