This weekend there were no Danish Leagues matches. Focus was on the first Day-Night match staged in Denmark yesterday between the Danish national side and a DC Select XI and on tomorrows Danish Cup final betwwen Glostrup and Esbjerg also to be played at Koge. Next weekend there are no matches either because of Denmark's visit to Holland.
Saturday's match at Koge was a succes. This was mainly due to the exceptional efforts of the local club Koge who are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. The ground was a perfect picture compared to some of the other surfaces in Denmark that have suffered from the more harsh winter and late spring. Koges ground is in winter a training pitch for football, hence the use of lights. These however are not enough for cricket so they were supplemented for Saturday's game by mobile units. Although the standard may not be on international level it was by Dansih standards adequate.
The match itself was part of the preparations for the coming summer with the visit to Holland next weekend. The Denmark side was without Mickey Lund who has again a hamstring injury and Frederck Klokker who is tied up in England. However Michael Pedersen was back for the match. Denmark were playing a Select XI comprising of the professionals residing in Denmark this season, the up and coming possibles for Denmark and finally the local Koge hero from the past Soren Sorensen, who was one of Denmarks more lethal bolwers in the late nineties.
The Select XI batted first and generally were pushed hard for scoring. NP Kopperholdt took two quick wickets and the pressure was kept up as Select players regulary got out. Only John Kedey from Svanholm held the innings together and towards the end John with Claus Hansen did increase the scoring rate so that the Select XI posted 183 on the board.
The Danish batsmen some came under pressure as Hanid Zaman took the first three wickets. It was as though the Danish batsmen had difficulty in handling the twillight. Farruhk Sharzad took two more wickets and the Danes were in trouble at 63 for 5 but then Carsten Pedersen and David Borchersen played Denmark out of danger finding it more easier in the darkness. David Borchersen took inroads in the Select bowling hitting several sixes and the Danish side romped home winning by 5 wickets.
During the break the spectators (yes there were quite a few) were entertained by several smallboy's teams plaing kanga cricket. One of the local satelite television stations covered the event as part of a one hour program about cricket.
