VOC Rotterdam maintained their position at the top of the Hoofdklasse table on Sunday with a crushing eight-wicket victory over title rivals HCC, while VRA Amsterdam and HBS Den Haag kept their challenges alive by winning at Excelsior and VVV respectively.

HCC repeated their collapse against the VOC attack, although this time it was from the platform of a 104-run opening partnership by Tom de Grooth and Dirk Rijkens. Once veteran spinner Robbie de Widt broke through to dismiss Rijkens, however, the HCC batting fell apart, de Grooth following soon after for 65 and then only Feiko Kloppenburg reaching double figures.

The most successful of the VOC bowlers was off-spinner Mohammad Kashif (a.k.a. KM Hussain), whose ten overs brought him figures of four for 22.

VOC replied with an opening stand of 118 between Michael Dighton (61) and Maarten van Ierschot (69), and then Bas Zuiderent and Chris Smith knocked off the remaining runs, the whole innings taking only 28.5 overs.

VRA had it somewhat less comfortable in Schiedam, eventually beating Excelsior by three wickets.

The Amsterdam men put up one of their best displays of the season in the field to dismiss the home side for 193 in the final over. Mark Cleary again gave Excelsior a great start with 53 from 63 balls, but the keystone of the innings was a patient 69 from captain Eric Gouka, made off 123 balls.

Mike Smith combined an initial medium-pace spell with five overs of off-spin, and picked up three for 37. Peter Borren was again economical, while Eric Szwarczynski bowled his longest Hoofdklasse spell and, like Borren and Victor Grandia, was rewarded with two wickets.

Cleary then gave his side a great chance by taking three early wickets in a lively seven-over spell, leaving VRA on 40 for three, but when he left the field with a back strain Darrin Murray and Smith set about turning the innings around with a 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Smith’s departure for 61, caught behind off Luuk van Troost – who bowled a fine spell – triggered a middle-order collapse, but Garth Brown saw Murray (59 not out) through to the win.

HBS achieved the highest total of the day, chasing down VVV’s 256 and winning by four wickets with five balls to spare.

Foundation of the HBS run-chase was a remarkable century by former Dutch international Robert van Oosterom, making his first Hoofdklasse appearance of the season to strengthen a somewhat brittle batting line-up. He had useful partnerships with New Zealander Ash Russell, promoted to opener, and with Grant Elliott, and then presided over proceedings as HBS fought their way towards the target.

By the time he was sixth out only nine more runs were needed, and Sebastiaan Smit and Guy Borba Lefebvre made sure of the victory. For VVV, Mohammad Sadiq bowled a tight ten-over spell for one for 28, but the other bowlers were unable to stem the flow of runs.

Earlier, Sadiq had top-scored for VVV with 68, sharing an 84-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Mohammad Shabaz to enable their side to set HBS such a substantial target. Alexei Kervezee took three for 40 as the lower-order batsmen hit out, but the most effective member of the HBS attack was Sjoerd Weurman with two for 23 from ten overs.

In Den Haag, Quick had every reason to be relieved that coach Faiek Davids has finally arrived. They were 59 for five against Hermes-DVS when Davids came to the wicket, and he proceeded to blast 93 from just 94 balls, hitting six fours and seven sixes in an extraordinary innings. His effort, assisted by Job van Bunge in a 135-run stand for the sixth wicket, enabled Quick to set a reasonable target, the innings closing on 196 for seven.

Not a huge score by Hoofdklasse standards, but it proved more than enough on this occasion, Hermes collapsing to 71 all out in 26.4 overs after Jeroen Brand dismissed coach Pankaj Joshi in the first over. With only Harro Seelaar providing much resistance, finishing on 25 not out, brothers Henk-Jan and Geert Maarten Mol were again among the wickets for Quick, each taking three for 15.

Further evidence of Rood en Wit’s vulnerability came at Voorburg, where they were dismissed for 124 after having been 60 for one at one stage. Opener Rif Bakas again top-scored with 36, but otherwise only Enoch Nkwe and Klaas-Jan van Noortwijk were able to reach double figures.

The wickets were shared among the VCC attack, off-spinner Adeel Raja the most successful with three for 11.

Rood en Wit might have had a chance when they reduced Voorburg to 34 for three, but opener Raja and coach Ryan Le Loux knocked off the runs without further loss, Raja finishing on 37 and Le Loux on 56.
