The Hoofdklasse season reaches its climax this weekend – weather pemitting – with three matches scheduled to resolve the outstanding issues at both ends of the table.
As it happens, the two leading sides were due to play the two candidates for relegation in the matches rained off on 19 August, and those games will be played on Saturday. Rood en Wit will have one further chance of escape when they play their final match against Excelsior on Sunday.
If all matches go according to form, VRA Amsterdam will be confirmed as champions, and Rood en Wit will return to the Eerste Klasse. Should the Haarlem side pull off the upset of the season and defeat the leaders, however, and VOC Rotterdam beat VVV Amsterdam, then play-offs would be necessary to decide both questions – unless, of course, Rood en Wit made it two in a row by also defeating Excelsior.
In that case VVV would be relegated, but a play-off would still be necessary to decide the championship.
It is already known that ACC Amsterdam will play in the Hoofdklasse next season, having won the Eerste Klasse title last weekend. They return after a two-year absence.
