All through the season Glostrup were cited as the clear favourites brushing aside most of the opposition except in two matches and were before today's playoff on present form expected to do the same with Svanholm. Svanholm, on the other hand, have had to fight hard with the skin of their teeth to get their wins, especially towards the end where the club have fought with a long injury list.
Today's game turned out to be the complete opposite.
Svanholm knew that Glostrup have been a good chaser of totals with a sort of blitzkreig approach to the early batting. Svanholm then thought perhaps it was better to put them in and make it hard for them to build up an innings on a ground that had been cut specially on the morning so it was quick.
Svanholm struck early, removing opener Martin Jensen with just 4 on the board. Australian Niel Schlittler came in and with Anders Rasmussen took the score to 45 without much difficulty. A big innings looked likely but then Niel got himself caught at mid-wicket, quickly followed by a run out and Glostrup were 47 for 3. Anders was soon bowled by zishan Shah and it was left to David Borchersen to lift the innings. This he did for a while but he fell sweeping Bobby Chawla into his own wicket at 93 and Glostrup were in trouble. The lower order failed to dig in except for Rohit Kinayia who found a partner in last man Henrik Hansen and these two added 20 runs for the last wicket until Rohit ran himself out. Glostrup had 128 runs on the board, not very many considering the size and speed of Svanholm's ground. Now Svanholm had the chance to get even.
Despite some very hostile bowling from Henrik Hansen who peppered Mickey Lund with short balls, Svanholm got off to a good start with Zishan Shah pouncing on any opportunity to hit the ball over the infield. Glostrup's opening bowlers were soon replaced by the second string seamers who again were replaced by spin. And it was Anders Rasmussen who had Mickey Lund caught pulling a shorter ball, but that only brought Soren Vestergaard in, playing his last match for Svanholm. He lustily stroked the ball to the boundary, until he gave Niel Schittler a return catch off a leading edge. But by then the damage was done. Although Svanholm lost two more wickets at the end, Zishan Shah with a runner made sure of victory by forcing a wide to win by four wickets.
But how did this change come about, somebody asked? Well one thing to remember is the fact Glostrup have yet to win any Championship while Svanholm have, before today, 21 to their name. So it is quite likely Glostrup got all rubbery because of nerves. That's a shame considering how well they've done during the season but Svanholm's victory is all the more so deserved as they fought through several setbacks. Australian John Kedey thanked after the match Glostrup for a good fight and said that he had never witnessed winning a Championship with so many injuries and internal squabbles.
Tomorrow (Sunday) the final piece of the jigsaw is placed when Skanderborg defend the right to play in the Elitedivision next year against AB, who ended second in the 1st. division.
