Cricketing Career

Andrew WhiteWho had the greatest influence on your career?
My parents have encouraged and supported me all along. Les Jones (Ards C.C), Murray Lee and Eric Sinnamonn (School) were tremendous in my important years but Adi Birrell has given me the knowledge and the confidence to allow me to progress to the level I’m at now.

What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To play a key role in a succesful Ireland World Cup Campaign in the West Indies.

What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
Qualifying for the 2007 World Cup, Joint Man of the Match in Ireland's Intercontinental Cup win v Kenya, Scoring the winning runs for Ireland v West Indies in 2004.

What was your worst cricketing moment?
Losing to Scotland in the Intercontinental Cup (Aug 2004) – Still cant quite understand it having played so well all year. We lost when we only had to draw – it made the magnificant win over Kenya in the 2005 final all the more sweeter.

What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Billy ‘Bumper’ Dale was subjected to fielding third man – third man in his last year at North Down so he ordered a young teenager to get him a bike which he duly set off on at the end of an over to take up his position on the opposite side of the ground by the pavilion.

Who is your best friend in Irish Cricket and why?
Closest friends in the game and outside of the game are D Kennedy (cousin) at North Down and my room mate and training partner with Ireland Mr McCallan.

Irish Cricket

Who is your favourite Irish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Past: Matt Dwyer – tough competitor who gave his all. He has continued his involvement with the senior squad on the coaching front showing his commitment to Irish Cricket.
Present: Peter Gillespie – goes about his cricket quietly making valuable team contributions time and time again.

Which is your favourite Irish cricket ground, and why?
Stormont have worked very hard and on the day of the England game it was obvious what a great arena it can be. Clontarf is a great place to play also.

Who is the best young Irish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Eoin Morgan.

What do you think of overseas professionals in Irish club cricket?
A must. Taimur Khan and Eugene Moleon were instrumental in my performances in club cricket and helped take my game to a higher level.

Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes

What are your main complaints about Irish cricket?
The quality of wickets. I do recognise the amount of work that some clubs do put into their grounds though!

How would you set about improving the standard of Irish cricket?
Better wickets. Continued quality coaching. Those involved in coaching at all levels deserve great credit for their part in helping Ireland to a clean sweep of European trophies.

How would you set about making Irish cricket more popular?
ODI rules e.g. power play rules etc...and coloured clothing in league cricket. Not difficult.

International Cricket

Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
West Indies - great to watch.

Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Sri Lanka, Canada, South Africa, Holland, Namibia.

Which was your favourite, and why?
Namibia - purely for being a member of the Gatwick 5 that took over 40hrs to get there and then winning the ICC Intercontinental Cup in amazing fashion.

Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
Chris Gayle - so casual.

Who is your favourite English cricketer, and why?
Monty Panesar, was lucky to play with him at Northamptonshire and learn from him in the nets. Brilliant bowler.
