Who had the greatest influence on your career?
My parents. When I moved to Sydney, my dad would travel down every weekend just to watch the game. It is about a four-hour drive and I don't know how he did it. I am grateful to them for their support and positivity.
What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To keep playing till I’m 60. I think by then I’ll have to shorten my run up.
What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
Playing against England this year was my most memorable moment.
What was your worst cricketing moment?
My debut against Hampshire. Anyone who was there, or even heard about it, would agree. I went for about three hundred off 5. I guess I just got the yips. Infact, the whole C&G trophy was a nightmare. I have never played so badly and hopefully never will again.
What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Jeremy Bray's run out against Glamorgan was just priceless. If you haven't seen it, check it out on the web.
Who is your best friend in Irish Cricket and why?
I’ve learned to not get too close to these lads, because in the fines meeting your 'mate' will be the first to have his hand up. I learned the hard way! In saying that... if you grab two Mooneys and stir well, add one Johnston, a pinch of Bray (only a pinch), garnished with a Gillespie, you have a perfect recipe for craic!
Who is your favourite Irish cricketer (past and present), and why?
I would've loved to play against Alan Lewis, Angus Dunlop and John Hoey in their prime. They all still churn out runs regularly, and you can tell that they are quality cricketers. In the team now, no one is more proud to represent Ireland than Paul Mooney. He’s the kind of guy you'd want beside you in the trenches. His passion for the shamrock rubs off on the rest of the boys.
Which is your favourite Irish cricket ground, and why?
Phoenix park, because there's no place like home.
Who is the best young Irish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Shane Getkate from Malahide and Sinead O'Farrelly from Phoenix are two names to remember for the future.
What do you think of overseas professionals in Irish club cricket?
If they work with the juniors, pros are a must. However, I’ve seen a few 'ego's' arrive and think that because they are scoring runs each week, they don't have to coach. I’d put them on the first plane home!
Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes.
What are your main complaints about Irish cricket?
The pitches can be a tad inconsistent at times.
How would you set about improving the standard of Irish cricket?
Sort out the pitch conditions. Some of the tracks I played on this year were an embarrassment.
How would you set about making Irish cricket more popular?
Coloured clothing, white balls etc.
Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
Australia , for obvious reasons.
Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Australia, England, Scotland and Wales.
Which was your favourite, and why?
Australia. Because the wickets are harder and faster.
Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
Andrew Symonds. When he gets going… he hits a long ball!
Who is your favourite English cricketer, and why?
Ed Joyce (because really he's one of us!)
Which other sports do you play regularly?
Golf occasionally, but I’m woeful.
What are your hobbies?
Listening to music, going to gigs, hanging out with Maebh’s (my wife) family, public speaking and talking rubbish!
Who is your favourite musical artist?
Lisa Hannigan and David Kitt.
Who is your favourite author?
Mark Brandon Read.
Which is your favourite film?
Zoolander, Old School and Chopper.
What is your favourite newspaper?
The Irish Times.
What is your favourite television programme?
Any animal documentary, Scrubs, Home and Away.
What is your favourite web site? CricketEurope.
What is your favourite type of food? KFC three-piece meal, with potato and gravy and a Mountain Dew drink. When I’m not dieting I might grab a Zinger burger as well (sorry Adi).
Where is your favourite place to go on holiday? Port Douglas in North Queensland.
