Another day, another heavy defeat for Kenya’s ladies team, this time at the hands of Zimbabwe. Once again the visitors batted first and thanks largely to their top order managed to put on 189 before being bowled out. Margaret Banja was once again Kenya’s best bowler returning figures of 3/24 off 10 overs. A decent effort considering she bowled at the start of the innings, and her wickets were all the main run scorers for Zimbabwe.
Sadly, it was again Kenya’s batting that let us down. This time at least 3 players managed to get into the teens, so marginal improvement on the first game, but the final score showed just how much work needs to be done before Kenya will be a competitive team in women’s cricket. By the time Zimbabwe’s bowlers and a couple of silly run outs had decimated the batting line up, Kenya were 85 all out, a deficit of 104 runs.
Tomorrow sees Kenya return to Premier Club to face Uganda in what is now effectively a third place play off. Despite losing their second game to Tanzania, the surprise package of the tournament so far, Uganda will still go into tomorrow’s match as favourites. At least they have managed to get past 100 runs in both games and have also restricted their opponents to less runs. Here’s hoping Kenya can find some sort of form and avoid finishing bottom of the table.
Aga Khan will be the venue for the contest between Tanzania and Zimbabwe to decide the tournament winner and the team to progress to the next round. Going by the two matches each have played so far, Zimbabwe look to be slightly the stronger team. However 2006 has been a really good year for Tanzanian cricket and there might just be another upset on the cards. Much will rest on all-rounder Hamisi. Yesterday she made the highest score in the tournament so far, 56, and took 4/36 with the ball in Tanzania’s win. Tanzania will be hoping she can repeat this performance today. Zimbabwe will again look to their top order to provide ther platform for a big score. It should be an exciting match.
