Yet another dismal performance by Kenya’s ladies team. This time handed a belting by Uganda in the third place play off. Batting first, Uganda used almost all of their 50 overs to set Kenya 150 to win. As noted elsewhere in comments on this tournament, extras were easily the top scorer of the innings with 54. Once again Kenya’s poor batting highlighted how far behind the other teams we are. C. Namugenyi ripped the heart out of the Kenyan line up taking 5/12 and leaving the hosts bowled out for a total of 58, only 4 runs more than they conceded in sundries.
After the Kenyan team’s poor preparation for the tournament, it was perhaps optimistic to think that we could have finished top, but I don’t think anyone thought we would finish last, certainly not by quite such a margin. As positive as I try to be about Kenyan cricket, it is hard to find any plusses to take from this competition from a playing perspective. If Kenya are to compete on the international stage in women’s cricket, there is a lot of very hard work to be done.
Only the fact that Kenya successfully hosted the tournament can come as a positive, especially considering the endless rain that has battered the country. Credit must go to the groundsmen at both Aga Khan and Premier Club for enabling play to go ahead.
