It is not often when cricket hits the national news in Denmark but it did happen the other day when Amjad Khan of Kent decided to change his nationality and become a UK citizen.
This means of course that Amjad will not be playing again for Denmark. Amjad was last programmed to appear for Denmark in the ICC Trophy in 2005 where Denmark were not that far off from qualifying but shorty before the tournament stated Amjad got himself a back strain and pulled out. This was a disappointment for many and for some resentment as Amjad played for Kent while the ICC Trophy was still going on.
The Danish newspapers concentrated on the fact that Amjad has aspirations for playing for England. A local however pointed out that he was sure that at least 7 or 8 English bowlers would have to be injured before that would happen. Amjad has been one of Kent's prolific wicket takes these last two seasons but at a cost of runs and this, the Danes think, will be his greatest problem before making an English side. And it is certain it would be the Test side itself.
A lot of cricket supporters will be following Amjad in the coming year and hope he will succeed. Amjad himself has said he remains a Dane at heart.
