With only ten matches remaining to be played in the CCA 50 overs league, it has boiled down to a battle between Coast Gymkhana, who currently head the table, and second placed Mombasa Sports Club’s ‘A’ side. While Gymkhana lead the table with 134 points from 8 games, MSC are in the stronger position having won 6 from 6, including a crucial away fixture against Gymkhana. Winning their next match at home against Simba Union on January 7th should restore parity. Simba Union are the 3rd placed side in the competition, but should not trouble MSC’s senior team who have looked a notch above all opposition so far.
MSC ‘B’ take on Bhurani at home today in a match that will go a long way to shaping the bottom of the table. A Bhurani win will virtually cement their 4th place in the league, but should MSC record an upset, it will throw things wide open. Their first match back in January will is against 5th placed Shree Cutchi Lewa S.C. who have only two games to play. If MSC come into the game with a win against Bhurani, it will mean that SCLSC will need a victory against the young MSC side if they are to avoid the wooden spoon.
With heavy rain having disrupted many of the matches earlier in the season, the rescheduling means that the event will culminate in a top of the table clash between MSC ‘A’ and Gymkhana on February 25th. Stewart Kayne’s men will no doubt be looking to this as their chance to gain revenge for the early season loss and upset MSC’s plans for an unbeaten season. Whatever happens in between, it is highly likely that this match will decide who wins the tournament. Include the tri series between Kenya, Canada and Scotland, the next couple of months should provide some very exciting cricket at the coast.
