Dutch national coach Peter Cantrell has made three changes in naming his squad for next year's World Cricket League First Division tournament in Nairobi.
As expected, Quick Haag pair Darron Reekers and Edgar Schiferli, both on their way back from injury, have been included in the side, and there is a return for off-spinner Adeel Raja, who last played for The Netherlands in the 2005 Intercontinental Cup. Raja has one of the best ODI records of any Dutch bowler, and it will be interesting to see a direct comparison between him and fellow off-spinner Muhammad Kashif.
Those who miss out from the side which played in South Africa earlier this month are batsmen Tom de Grooth and Maurits van Nierop and left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar. Seelaar returned early from the South African tour with a shoulder injury.
The return of Reekers and Schiferli will stiffen the seam attack, while Reekers' presence also provides the option of a pinch-hitting opener, a role which he filled with some success in the ODIs against Sri Lanka in the summer. With the programme for the WCL tournament very intensive and the experienced bowlers, Reekers, Stelling, de Leede and Schiferli, all prone to injury, it will be important for Cantrell to be able to shuffle his resources in Nairobi.
The full squad is:
Luuk van Troost (Excelsior '20, captain)
Jeroen Smits (HCC, vice-captain)
Peter Borren (VRA)
Daan van Bunge (Excelsior '20)
Ryan ten Doeschate (Essex)
Mark Jonkman (HCC)
Muhammad Kashif (VOC)
Alexei Kervezee (Worcestershire)
Tim de Leede (VCC)
Adeel Raja (VRA)
Darron Reekers (Quick Haag)
Edgar Schiferli (Quick Haag)
Billy Stelling (HBS)
Eric Szwarczynski (VRA)
Bas Zuiderent (VOC)
The KNCB has confirmed that the Nairobi squad forms 'in principle' the basis for the team that will take part in the World Cup in March.
