This is the first part of Kenya’s year in review, a skeleton summary of the year into the following sections to make them easier to follow: Administration, Domestic, International, and Junior.
January
Administration:
- Roger Harper is appointed National Team Coach.
- The Kenya Cricket Association is officially dissolved and replaced by Cricket Kenya.
- Sharad Ghai is acquitted of stealing from the old KCA.
- Kenya is chosen as host for the 2007 World Cricket League Division 1 tournament.
Domestic:
- Swamibapa ‘A’ defeat Nairobi Jaffery ‘A’ to win the NPCA Twenty-20 title.
- BAPS win the Woolmatt 6-a-side tournament in Nakuru.
Junior:
- Kenya defeat Uganda in the final to win the regional U15 title.
February
Administration:
- Cricket Kenya announce a kit-sponsorship deal with Ihsan sports of Pakistan that runs through to the end of the 2007 World Cup.
Domestic:
- NPCA 45-Over tournament starts.
- Ipplepen and Cockenbach, two club sides from England tour Kenya playing in all three cricket-playing provinces.
International:
- After much wriggling by Zimbabwe, they finally host Kenya in a 5-match series. Rain washes out Kenya’s chances of winning their first ever ODI series, but they still return home having drawn 2-2 with their hosts. Thomas Odoyo is named man of the series.
March
Domestic:
- The Akshar League begins in Nakuru under the stewardship of the Rift Valley Cricket Association.
- CCA Twenty-20 tournament starts.
International:
- Kenya lose the away series in Bangladesh 4-0. Despite the humbling defeat, Kenya are now officially on the ICC Ranking’s Table after their 2 wins against Zimbabwe.
- Kenya ‘A’ suffer a heavy defeat to the Netherlands in a warm up OD game before the Intercontinental Cup match.
- Steve Tikolo makes a magnificent unbeaten 212 to help Kenya avoid the follow on in the Intercontinental Cup match against The Netherlands. The game ends in a draw, but the Dutch take first innings points.
- Tikolo’s 212 makes him the first person to reach 1000 runs in the Intercontinental Cup.
April
Administration:
- Cricket Kenya organises and hosts a 4-day coaching clinic in Nairobi.
Domestic:
- Coast Gymkhana host and win a tri series against Shree Cutchi Lewa and Simba Union.
- The final of the NPCA 45-over competition is postponed due to the rains.
May
Administration:
- Kenya is chosen to host the 2010 Under 19 World Cup.
- Kenya is made the Regional Centre for East and Central Africa by the African Cricket Association.
- The ICC’s Future Tours Program is released guaranteeing Kenya tri-series against Scotland and South Africa followed by Scotland and New Zealand in 2008.
- Terry Jenner conducts his Spin Clinic in Nairobi. It is attended by players from Uganda, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Nigeria as well as Kenya.
- Maurice Odumbe loses his appeal against a 5-year ban effectively ruling out a return to cricket.
Domestic:
- Nairobi Jaffery ‘A’ win the NPCA 6-a-side season opening tournament.
- NPCA awards night is held and attended by representatives from Cricket Kenya, the African Cricket Association and the Kenya Government. All present pledge to commit to developing the game within Kenya.
- Coast Gymkhana win CCA Twenty-20 tournament 2006.
Junior:
- The Girls Secondary School Challenge is held for the first time and used as a selection process for the World Cup qualifiers.
June
Administration:
- Auditors deliver a damning report on the disbanded KCA’s finances justifying its dissolution and the setting up of Cricket Kenya.
- Rift Valley Cricket Association successfully hold their elections.
Domestic:
- RVCA hosts the Jagir Singh Memorial 6-a-side tournament in Nakuru comprising teams from both Rift Valley and Nairobi. Swamibapa 'A' beat Nairobi Jaffery in the final.
- Swamibapa ‘A’ beat Kanbis ‘A’ by 32 runs in the final of the NPCA 45-Over tournament.
International:
- Kenya ‘A’ lose to Uganda in the final of the Atul Shah quadrangular tournament in Mombasa. CCA lose to Tanzania in the third place play-off despite a win against them in the round robin stage. Uganda prove a point by winning all their matches.
- Kenya ‘A’ start their tour to Denmark.
July
Administration:
- Samir Inamdar elected to ICC Board as one of three Associate representatives.
- Cricket Kenya and the ACA host the East Africa Umpires summit in Nairobi.
Domestic:
- NPCA Main League starts minus Nairobi Jaffery ‘A’ who pull out at the last minute.
International:
- Kenya ‘A’ conclude their tour to Denmark. They played 4 games against club sides, winning 2 and losing 2, lost twice to the Danish national side and registered a consolation win against Denmark U23. While the results were not what Kenya were looking for, the touring experience will be invaluable.
August
Administration:
- Cricket Kenya launches their website. It promises briefly before turning into a major disappointment. It is currently unavailable as it is ‘under construction’.
- Mombasa Sports Club is granted ODI status, a major coup for Kenyan cricket.
- Kenya provides the umpires for the WCL Africa Division 2 tournament.
- Tanmay Mishra, Hiren Varaiya, Maurice Ouma and Nehemiah Odhiambo are named as Kenya’s representatives to the Winter Training Camp.
Domestic:
- CCA season opening 6-a-side tournament is won by Mombasa Sports Club ‘A’.
International:
- Kenya loses a nail biting Intercontinental Cup match to Canada in Toronto confirming they will miss out on the final.
- The national team regain some pride as they convincingly defeat Canada 2-0 in the ODI series, giving Kenya its first ever ODI series win. Hiren Varaiya takes a wicket with his first ball in an ODI.
- Returning home, Kenya are handed a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of past rivals Bangladesh. Weak batting is the main reason for Kenya’s loss.
Junior:
- Oshwal High defeat Nairobi Gymkhana in the final of the Crown Berger Obuya Junior Cricket tournament
September
Domestic:
- The inaugural Cricket in the Wild event is held at Ol Pejeta Game Conservancy to raise money for community projects in the area. The event is a great success raising a total of US$120 000.
- CCA Main League starts.
- Akshar ‘A’ defeat minor premiers Eldoret in the final of the Akshar League.
International:
- A full strength Kenya side is beaten 3-0 in a one-day series by the visiting Commonwealth Bank Centre of Excellence from Australia.
October
International:
- Kenya tour Uganda beating their hosts 3-0 in the one day series and winning the 3-day match convincingly.
November
Administration:
- The Africa Cup, scheduled for December is officially postponed until May 2007.
- Despite initial doubts, Nairobi is confirmed as the venue for the WCL Division 1 in January.
Domestic:
- Cricket Kenya postpones the local provincial competition, due to be played in November, until after the WCL.
International:
- Rain prevents Kenya from registering their first win in the Intercontinental Cup against Bermuda, but they do take first innings points.
- Kenya beat Bermuda 3-0 as Mombasa Sports Club hosts its first official ODI series with great success. A number of Kenyan players register personal bests.
Junior:
- Greensteds win the RVCA Schools 6-a-side tournament.
December
Administration:
- Cricket Kenya announces a 6-year deal with Nimbus Sports worth US$1 million in potential sponsorship.
Domestic:
- Rain washes out the latter part of the NPCA Main League. Kanbis are top of both the Super Division and Division 1 as things stand.
- Kenya’s women finish a dismal last in the four-nation Africa zone World Cup qualifiers in Nairobi.
