Cricketing Career

Kenny Carroll battingWho had the greatest influence on your career?
My parents, especially my Dad for all the lifts and unsung work. Brian Donnelly, he was my first coach in Railway when I was a youngster. Brian O’Rourke did and still does great work with Leinster under age teams I played on. Adi Birrell for getting me to challenge myself and be ambitious.

What is your ultimate cricketing aspiration?
To keep improving as a cricketer and enjoying the game. To become an established part of a successful Ireland team for many years to come.

What is your most memorable cricketing moment?
Winning the Irish Senior Cup in 2006, with team mates I had been playing with since we were kids.

What was your worst cricketing moment?
Losing two Irish senior Cup finals in 2003 and 2005 against North County - especially '05.

What is your funniest cricketing moment?
Playing for Railway thirds a good few years ago with a ball that had been used for 10 seasons in a row. It was black and as hard as stone. I don’t think Darrell Hair would have passed it! Any time playing with Adrian Murphy is usually funny, whether he is batting, fielding or talking, he is a real entertainer and a class player..

Who is your best friend in Irish Cricket and why?
I owe cricket many friends and I’m still young. All my team mates with Railway Union and Ireland. Also Ted Britton, we were together in South Africa for a few months at the HPC in Pretoria and he is great craic.

Irish Cricket

Who is your favourite Irish cricketer (past and present), and why?
Peter Gillespie, for his great service to Ireland for years and his cool head in tricky situations.

Which is your favourite Irish cricket ground, and why?
Any ground that prepares a good track will do me, but one in particular is Milverton home of The Hills. I’ve played in a lot of great matches there through the years at all levels. The tracks are always good, the cricket is competitive and the hospitality great.

Who is the best young Irish cricketer you have seen in recent times?
Apart from Eoin Morgan! I think Kevin O’Brien has a big future in the game. He just doesn’t give bowlers any respect, great to watch. There are excellent schoolboys around and I’m sure many of them will become very good players, just let them enjoy their cricket for now.

What do you think of overseas professionals in Irish club cricket?
They are very beneficial if used correctly. They need to work hard during the week coaching the club’s youth and adult players and in local schools. Their performances at the weekend are not as important as this work.

Do you think bowlers should be restricted in domestic cricket?
Yes, 10 overs is fine.

What are your main complaints about Irish cricket?
The pitches bar some exceptions are generally poor, low and slow. Some sports punch above their weight regarding government grants and media coverage etc., I think cricket should learn from this and promote itself more.

How would you set about improving the standard of Irish cricket?
Have an inter-pro series played with ODI rules. Improve pitches in club grounds. Have more indoor centres so players can practice regularly throughout the winter months (Fair play to North County and Bready for their vision in this regard). Have contracts for International players so they can practice more. This would produce more consistent performances for the senior team. More development officers and part / full time coaches working with young players.

How would you set about making Irish cricket more popular?
Get more backing for the senior international team so they can keep improving. Look at how rugby has taken off in Ireland on the back of success at the top level. Try to get highlights of international matches on TV. More development officers working spreading the game in primary schools.

International Cricket

Which Test team, if any, do you support, and why?
West Indies. They were still near the top when I began watching cricket on TV. The flair and style their players traditionally have is good to watch.

Which overseas countries have you played cricket in?
Holland, South Africa and UAE.

Which was your favourite, and why?
UAE. They were all enjoyable for different reasons but playing day/night, televised matches against quality opposition at the impressive Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi was a great experience.

Who is your favourite world cricketer, and why?
I admire many cricketers for different reasons but one that comes to mind is Sanath Jayasuriya for his attacking, opening batting.
