Ireland’s victory over Bangladesh has got people talking about Ireland’s international status. Annoyingly, most of them are wrong.
So here are a few details that any journalists (or commentators) that happen to read this can use when writing about Ireland.
- Ireland do NOT have permanent ODI status.
- Ireland have had temporary ODI status since the first of January 2006.
- They gained this status by finishing in the top five of the 2005 ICC Trophy.
- The status lasts until the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier, where they will have to finish in the top six to regain it.
- This status also applies to Bermuda, Canada, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland.
- The win against Bangladesh has NOT changed Ireland’s status in international cricket.
- All it has done is make Ireland eligible for a spot in the main ranking table.
- There is currently NO SUCH THING as permanent ODI status.
Hope that helps some people!
