Ireland’s victory over Bangladesh has got people talking about Ireland’s international status. Annoyingly, most of them are wrong.

So here are a few details that any journalists (or commentators) that happen to read this can use when writing about Ireland.

  1. Ireland do NOT have permanent ODI status.
  2. Ireland have had temporary ODI status since the first of January 2006.
  3. They gained this status by finishing in the top five of the 2005 ICC Trophy.
  4. The status lasts until the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier, where they will have to finish in the top six to regain it.
  5. This status also applies to Bermuda, Canada, Kenya, the Netherlands and Scotland.
  6. The win against Bangladesh has NOT changed Ireland’s status in international cricket.
  7. All it has done is make Ireland eligible for a spot in the main ranking table.
  8. There is currently NO SUCH THING as permanent ODI status.

Hope that helps some people!
