Danish Crciket's chairman Thomas Kentorp reports on the season so far.
After being chairman of the Danish Cricket Association for 4 months I've never been so busy in my whole lifespan of 50 years. But it's an exciting challange just the same and brings plenty of adventures. The big challenge, however, is to bring Danish Cricket back to a higher level of activities while still balancing the books. We have laid the turbulent years of 2005 and 2006 behind us and now got complete control over our financial management thanks to Ole Roland in the office and our Financial Officer Umair Butt.
But today all our support from the ICC is activity based and this year we are taking part in the ICC's High Performance program which we hope will result in a good performance in the ICC World Cricket League division 2 tournament in Namibia during November. And after that our next target is the ICC World Cup Qualifier in the UAE in 2009. Our national side have been twice in Holland this year and will be in Ireland later this month. In August Bermuada will play two matches the 9th and 10th in Copenhagen and we are working hard on going to Kenya in October.
On the youth front the lack of finances has curtailed our work with the various teams as preparations for the coming ECC tournaments but the coaches and management are confident that all teams are ready. DCF's Development Officer Mickey Lund has been working hard with the clubs organising recruitment drives with success although the development work is the boards bad conscience. During the spring we have had meetings with the Danish Sports Association considering the possibilities of projects working with integration and recruitment. This needs to be worked on.
As Chairman I had my first taste of international work with meetings in London as part of the ICC Annual Conference Week. I thank Jorgen Holmen in giving me an introduction to working in an environment of 100 different countries. I can see now how good cricket stands in the world with the ICC now with 60 employees in Dubai controlling the game that never has had so many players as now. A new television agreement will eventually support the game in countries like Denmark but we still have to do a lot work of work to guarantee the game in Denmark. An example of this was when I came home from London there was a letter from Kolding's chairman complaining of experiencing the 3 cancelled match due to the lack of opponents. We have only one product to sell in DK and that is our tournament so there is work to do to make sure the game survives and has a decent level.
One way of achieving that can be the twenty/20 game that is now so popular through the cricketing world and draws the crowds. This is the short version of the game which appeals and should interest the Danes who always have complained of the time usage. We have this season held our first Twenty/20 tournament sponsored by Massaa, a juice product in the Infra Foodsbrand group. Herning won the final beating Norrebro at Svanholm Park. A thanks to Khuram Moghal from Albertslund CC and Umair Butt for their hard work.
The best of luck for our teams in the ECC tournaments and to Forty XL in Holland and I hope for some good and exciting games in the rest of the season.
