They say that cricket helps build mental strength. Certainly it is a perfect forum for it to be displayed as time and time again someone will stand up to play through pain or injury so their side can avoid defeat or win an important match. Last year, Hitesh Modi did exactly that when he batted one-handed with a broken finger to help Kenya avoid the follow on against the Netherlands in Nairobi.
This year it was Jimmy Kamande who showed that he is made of the same tough fibre when he played for Kenya in their Intercontinental Cup match against Canada despite being badly beaten up and injured by carjackers just two days before the match.
Despite his injuries Kamande wanted to play for Kenya, though he was in great pain and had to take pain killers throughout the match. It proved to be a blessing for Kenya that he did as it was his spell of brilliant bowling that took 4 wickets for no runs in the space of 10 balls to give Kenya the upper hand on day one. It was a great effort under any circumstances, but considering what he had been through and his condition, it was truly remarkable.
To rub salt into the wounds, the carjackers also made off with Kamande's playing kit. After he came back to shrug off his injuries and the mental trauma of being carjacked to play so well, one would have thought that this might be an ideal opportunity for a sponsor to step in...
