Voting is now open for CricketEurope Kenya’s Domestic Cricketer of the Year 2007. While there were many fine performances from individuals throughout the 2007 NPCA Main League, this award is to recognise those that have consistently performed well throughout the season and in so doing have contributed to their club’s success. The short list of 5 players is based on a simple calculation: Out of the available matches, these players produced match changing performances in the most games. Match changing performances are regarded as innings of over 35 or 3 or more wickets taken. Below is a compilation of the best performances from the five players. Note that performances not considered ‘match changing’ are not included unless they add to that performance from an all round perspective. This is not an ideal format to use to pick the top players, but until all match scorecards are made available, it is perhaps the best possible. Please vote for the player you think deserves to be recognised as the best Domestic player of 2007. A poll for International Player of the year will be conducted following the final International fixtures of the year against Bermuda.
Both awards will be presented to the players in January of 2008.
Amit Shukla (Ruaraka): - , 5/31, 6/34, - , 4/34, - , - , 48*, - , - , - , 4/35, 4/31, 62, 5/30.
It is no surprise that with Amit Shukla in their side Ruaraka finished top of division 1 and are now looking at playing in the Super Division next season. Shukla played consistently throughout, mostly in the bowling department, but proved he could also be handy with the bat when required. He is the only player in 2007 to have taken three five wicket hauls. Others that came close were Matthew Rudd (Kongonis), Vipul Khetani (Kanbis) and Adison ? (Ruaraka) who each took two.
Rajesh Patel (Nookers): 3/17, - , - , 50, - , 5/14, 3/3, 195, 50, 3/22, - , 35 + 2/28, - , 3/36 + 50*.
Perhaps the most consistent of all the players in the NPCA leagues, Patel insured that Nookers A remained in contention for a promotion spot throughout the season with significant contributions in 9 matches! Patel also recorded the highest individual score of the season with his 195 against Nairobi Gymkhana B in week 8.
Charles Obuya (Jaffery): - , - , - , - , - , 176*, 170 + 2/9, 135, 56* + 4/16, - , - , 112*, 88, 94.
By far the most prolific run scorer of the season, Charles Obuya was the only person to score four centuries and backed this up with three half centuries. Chipping in occasionally with the ball, he was no small reason why Nairobi Jaffery were untouchable in Division 3. That only one other player, Kavalijeet Bamania (Ruaraka), scored two centuries is an illustration of how well Obuya played and his consistency.
Ramesh Mepani (Kanbis): 64, 72*, 60 + 2/40, 68, 68 + 2/31, - , - , - , - , 4/46, - , - , 3/33.
A very tidy all round performance from Ramesh Mepani, especially at the beginning of the season when he hit 5 consecutive half centuries set Kanbis A up for yet another successful defence of their title. Certainly one of the best all-round performers in the league in 2007.
Ali Sheikh (Gymkhana): 4/87, - , - , 52, 3/52, 53 + 3/36, 3/14, 6/39, - , - , - , - , - , - .
Aga Khan had a pretty ordinary start to the 2007 season, but it would have been a whole lot worse had Ali Sheikh not been there. Performing consistently with both bat and ball throughout, often without much support, he kept the scores respectable and allowed Aga Khan to rally.
Below are the players who just failed to make the final short list. Congratulations to all the players for their fine efforts over the season. It is a good sign for Kenyan cricket that so many clubs from different divisions are represented in this list.
Alpesh Kamalia (Ruaraka): - , 69* + 2/21, - , - , - , - ,2/25 + 59, 88 + 2/55, - , 59 + 3/59, 52*, - , - , - .
Asim Khushit (Stray Lions): - , 3/16, - , 6/51, - , - , 3/29, 4/35, - , - , - , - , 3/24.
Brijal Patel (Premier Club): - , - , - , - , 66, - , - , 59, 54 + 4/35, - , - , 36 + 2/30, 48 + 4/36.
Dun Okinyo (Kongonis): - , 42 + 2/17, - , - , - , 4/10 + 50, - , 3/12, 3/38, - , - , 3/53 + 31, - , - .
Jitesh Siyani (Ruaraka): - , - , 52, - , 3/30, - , - , - , 3/10 + 58, - , - , 3/24, 4/26.
Saleem Cockar (Institute): - , 5/41, 3/30 + 16, - , - , 8/6 +18*, - , 3/22, - , 3/37, 3/23, - , - , - .
