News from with in Kenya indicates that Kenya's first choice opening bowler, Peter Ongondo, will miss the two ODIs against Canada due to a hamstring injury sustained in training at the Ruaraka ground yesterday. With a three match series against Bermuda to follow and a must win Intercontinental Cup game as well, Kenya have decided it is not worth the risk to play the increasingly influential bowler. Kenya Captain Steve Tikolo said he hoped his strike bowler, who took two wickets in his first over of the second innings against Canada, would be fit for the four day match indicating he may not even play the ODIs against Bermuda if it put him at risk of further injury before the longer game.
Ongondo's absence opens the door for either speedster Alfred Luseno or youngster Elijah Otieno to make their mark for Kenya in the One Day Game. Luseno has been tried before in ODIs without a great deal of success, but bowled with vim against Canada in the Intercontinental Cup and was unlucky not to pick up some early wickets. Otieno has impressed with his ability to beat the bat and could well provide a perfect foil for Thomas Odoyo. Other bowlers who are in the squad and could get the call up are veterans Tony Suji and Lameck Onyango.
Even without Ongondo and Tanmay Mishra, who is absent for personal reasons, Kenya will be confident going into today's match. They outclassed Canada over the three days of the Intercontinental cup game and saw Kenya A come close to upsetting the visitors in a limited overs match earlier. Canada for their part are itching to avenge recent losses to Kenya and are expected to come out fighting. It should be a good match and once again Cricket Kenya have encouraged attendance at the ground with free entry, so there is the possibility of a good crowd to cheer the home team on.
