It took only three balls of Bermuda's innings for Thomas Odoyo to strike, removing Jekon Edness lbw after the visitors lost the toss and were sent in by Steve Tikolo. Peter Ongondo joined the action next over inducing a nick from Rodney Trott and Bermuda were 2/1 and in a spot of bother.
Had Kenya held their catches, Bermuda would have been 4 down before rain interrupted play in the eleventh over, the most expensive being Alfred Luseno's bungled effort off David Hemp while he was yet to score. Hemp went on to anchor Bermuda's innings and finished the day unbeaten on 95. Pitcher also received an early life when he was put down by Kamande in the slips, but at least that error only cost 14 runs as he was run out by Nehemiah Odhiambo for 19 soon after play resumed.
Having been given his chance, Hemp knuckled down and played well for his fifty as first James Celestine and then Irvine Romaine sought to blast their way out of trouble. Celestine hit five 4s and a 6 on his way to 37 before he chased one too many off Hiren Varaiya's first over for Tikolo to take a wonderful catch diving to his left in the slips. Romaine was more fortunate in that he was allowed to take his score to 42 before Tikolo made him face anything other than spin. He lasted only three balls against Odoyo, trapped in front by one that kept low.
At 151 for 5 Kenya were definitely still in the driving seat, but Janeiro Tucker joined Hemp to continue the fightback with the latter looking comfortable and content to wait for the bad ball which he generally dispatched. Tucker came unstuck with stumps in sight when he tried to cut one that was not there from Varaiya who was rewarded by the sight of the ball crashing onto middle stump. The partnership had however provided 66 valuable runs and took Bermuda safely over the 200 mark.
Dwayne Leverock joined Hemp to see off the final few overs before close and Bermuda finished on 232/6 with Hemp having to wait until day two to see if he can reach his century. Kenya are now into the tail and with the quicks able to rest up over night, they will be hoping to take 4 early wickets when play resumes early at 9:30 am local time. Should they do so, there is still the chance of posting a sizable first innings lead when they bat, but there still remains the problem of containing Hemp at one end while they attack the tail at the other. From Bermuda's perspective it has been one of their better performances for a long time and if they can take their score over 250, they will be right back in the match.
