Steve Tikolo, the veteran Kenyan batsman, was the highest run-scorer in the recent series against Bermuda, reminding everyone that he is a batsman of rare pedigree. And in the process he achieved a significant milestone that has sadly been unheralded in the cricketing press. His 147 runs took his total in ODI's to 2785, placing him 97th in the list of run-scorers in ODI's.
He is the first batsman from an Associate nation to achieve this feat. Earlier this year his compatriot, the dynamic all-rounder Thomas Odoyo, became the first bowler from an Associate nation to break into the top 100 wicket-takers in ODI's, shortly before taking his 100th ODI wicket. He now has 107 wickets and is 78th in the list of all-time wicket-takers.
At 36 Tikolo may be in the autumn of his international career but he will have several milestones in his sights. He requires 215 more runs to reach the 3000-run milestone, while if he takes 14 more wickets, to add to the 75 victims he has already claimed with his wily off-spin, he will join Odoyo amongst the top 100 wicket-takers.
Hopefully form and fitness will enable him to achieve these feats to cap off a successful and significant career. Perhaps by then the youthful, fresh-faced apprentices currently being nurtured under his wing will be matured and ready to pick up the baton and drive Kenyan cricket into the next World Cup and beyond.
