Cricket Kenya CEO Tom Tikolo has confirmed that Rwanda will for the first time be sending a team to join the East Africa Under 15 competition to be held in Nairobi early next month. It will be a big step up for Rwanda as they have not competed against their more established neighbours before, but is a positive sign that cricket continues to expand in the region.
For hosts Kenya, it will be an important event to win as the winner from the region goes on to play the winners of other regions in Benoni, South Africa next year in a tournament that will also feature the hosts and Zimbabwe. It would be ideal experience for Kenya's youngsters, but they are expected to face stiff competition from both Tanzania and especially Uganda who have both put in a great deal of effort in improving their youth programs in recent years.
With William Kamanyi of Uganda appointed as the new development officer for the region, regular tournaments at youth level are expected to return to the calendar. Once a feature under Tom Tikolo, they had stopped when he left the position to take up duties with Cricket Kenya.
In related news, the Africa Cricket Association have confirmed that moves are afoot to resuscitate the Africa Cup. Talks are currently underway with the respective members and the tournament is expected to be back on the calendar as early as next year. If it follows the same format as previously advanced, it will see Kenya take on Uganda, Tanzania, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa A and possibly one or two other qualifiers.
