Significant cash prizes are on offer for the winning teams in the new Murgitroyd National Club 20/20 cup competition, which reaches its climax at the end of the forthcoming season.

Glasgow-headquartered European Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys Murgitroyd & Company has agreed a two-year sponsorship deal worth a five-figure sum, to promote the ‘fast food’ version of the game on a Scotland-wide basis.

This will start with four regional competitions, with the national semi-finals and final being played at Shawholm (Poloc Cricket Club, left) in Glasgow on Sunday August 3.

The existing 16-team Twenty20 competitions in the east of Scotland and the west will be re-launched as the Murgitroyd Masterton Trophy and the Murgitroyd Rowan Cup respectively. Two new regional competitions will also be set up, Murgitroyd Borders 20/20 and the Murgitroyd Caledonian 20/20.

The organising committees of these four tournaments will each receive a four-figure sum, of which £600 will be set aside as prize money for the regional winners, with a place in the semi-finals on the national finals day. The overall winning club will then receive a further cash prize of £1,000.

Roddy Smith, Chief Executive of Cricket Scotland , said: "This is a fantastic sponsorship, which will spark the imagination and enthusiasm of the participating clubs. And practically all of the sponsorship fund will be returned to the benefit of the participating clubs and district organisers.

"The new national competition will enhance and extend the enjoyment and competitiveness which will become even more apparent than it already is, and it is sure to generate good crowds for even the earlier regional rounds."

Keith Young, Chief Executive of Murgitroyd Group PLC, which has twelve offices around Europe, commented: "As a professional services business offering services across Scotland from our three offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, we have been interested in finding a way to help grassroots sport across the country, and this sponsorship achieves this whilst at the same time further raising Murgitroyd’s profile.

"We look forward to witnessing some spectacular cricket in the new Murgitroyd National Club 20/20 - and, of course, in welcoming the semi-finalists to the picturesque setting in Glasgow’s Pollok Estate, recently voted ‘Europe’s Best Park'."
