Dublin University v. Munster Reds

A miserable morning, but persistence won the day, to be rewarded with adequate weather and an enthralling game. Munster won the toss and chose to bat in a match reduced to 28 overs per side. Skipper Mike Martin (65) and Robin Russell (31) got off to a great start, not being separated until the 13th over, by which stage they had put on 69.

Solid contributions were then made by Robert Duggan and Simon Willis, the Reds eventually getting to 177 for 5.

Overcoming the loss of a wicket in the first over, Trinity then fared well with the second wicket (Ben Dunk and captain Mark Lane) putting on 80. By the half-way stage, the students were well ahead on D/L. The wheels first loosened and then fell off completely. To get an idea of the batting contribution from most of the DUCC team, Ben Dunk made 102 out of the total of 148, and the last 8 wickets fell for a mere 24 runs in the space of 9.5 overs. Munster obviously believe in the significance of obese, warbling females.

YMCA v The Hills

A cold, damp Sunday morning in Dublin greeted the two teams and it looked like the prospects for play were bleak. However all parties were willing to play and the hunch that good covering would lead to cricket was proved correctly. Once the rain stopped play got underway smartly, with the match reduced to 30 overs per side.

The Hills won the toss and chose to field. YMCA started solidly with Jack Shortt playing good shots and punishing anything wayward and at 59-3 seemed set to make a reasonable target. Four wickets then fell with the score on 59 to put The Hills firmly in control. Over the last 10 overs of the innings Paul Beacroft and new signing Rob Nandi dug in and then hit out for an unbeaten partnership of 59 to leave the Hills chasing a target of 119. Pick of the bowlers was the evergreen Matt Dwyer with 2/18 off his 6.

After a very short interval, mostly involving players trying to get some heat back in their bones, The Hills, and particularly Jeremy Bray then set about chasing the target as quickly as possible. At 76/2 off 14 overs with Bray on 53 you would have expected them to chase down the target with ease, but his dismissal saw a collective case of the wobbles that left the result in the balance until young Emmett Brannagan strode in at number 9 and showed his colleagues how to close a game. His 9* was the next highest score, with a generous contribution of 21 extras. Paul Beacroft was the pick of the bowlers with 3/22 off 6 as The Hills won by just 2 wickets.

The rain in Leinster saw no play possible in the games between Merrion v Railway Union and Clontarf v Pembroke.
