When you think of the town Ballyclare, you probably don’t think about cricket – sure they don’t even have a team?  Wrong, Templepatrick Cricket Club was established in 1969 and today they call their home The Cloughan in Ballyclare.

Most cricket clubs realise that future success depends heavily on their youth set up.  Templepatrick have a first class set up for youth cricket and senior coaching.  Headed by ECB Advanced Coach (level 3), Andy McCrea, they have a total of 9 ECB qualified coaches – 4 of which are above level 1.  Templepatrick have plenty to boast about if you are looking for a club that offer a professional set up to coaching for all levels.

Templepatrick reach out to 12 primary schools in their catchment area and the links have been in place for 12 years now.  This project introduces 500 under 11 school children to cricket.  They also have many links with secondary schools in the east Antrim area – Ballyclare High School being their main feeder club.

The Ballyclare based club focus greatly on the under age cricket.  They have over 110 children attending their under 11 coaching summer scheme, this is organised for June each season.  They also organise competition for under 13 and under 15 players – of which Templepatrick have 100 registered players for these teams.  The club decide not to organise an under 17 team, as an alternative they offer 4 senior Saturday teams for the players in this band to develop their game.

During the winter months, the club have introduced their own development winter academy - something that many clubs are investing in.  From January each year they organise coaching for their most promising youth players.  They have excellent indoor facilities at the Sixmile leisure centre in Ballyclare.  Available are 3 fully enclosed batting lanes, room for full length run up, space for fielding drills and of course the 9 qualified coaches.

Templepatrick have been represented by 13 players at various NCU, Northern Ireland or Ireland under age levels in the last 10 years - a great return by any clubs standards.  Robert Smith and James Jackson being the players most recently representing Ulster and Irish schools.

The club also provide 3 regional youth coaches – Andy McCrea, Keith Wilson and Bryan Scroggie.  Andy is one of only two ECB level 3 Advance Coaches – the other is Waringstowns Garfield Harrison.  Andy is well know in the Ireland coaching set-up, being involved at Interprovincial level, Northern Ireland talent academy for 11-15 year olds and under 15 and under 13 regional squads.

With the coaching set-up in place, the coaches available and with the young talent coming up to the senior teams – add that to the ambition that the club has – maybe Templepatrick Cricket Club will be making a move up the league at all levels.  If the future success of a club lies with its youth set-up – then the future for cricket in Ballyclare, with Templepatrick Cricket Club, is bound to be successful.
