Ireland travelled back to the National Cricket Centre in Couva, Trinidad to face Bangladesh in the 3rd round of the Under-15 Championship with a place in the semi finals going to the match winners.
Winning the toss Bangladesh Captain Iktedar Nazeef Ahmed surprisingly invited Ireland to bat on a pitch that looked dry and flat. Ireland got off to a very solid start with openers MacDonnell and Wylie reaching 70 without loss of the first 21 overs.
However, the introduction of leg spinner Nazeef Ahmed and tight bowling from Hasan and Khairuddin built pressure on the Irish batsmen when set. This triggered a collapse as batman after batsman gifted there wickets away in the pursuit of quick runs. Ireland eventually capitulated to 140 all out with Nazeef Ahmed picking up a well deserved 5 for.
In reply Bangladesh lost 2 quick wickets to the bowling of Eoghan Conway and went into the lunch break on 36 for 2. Conway resumed where he left of by picking up his third wicket shortly after lunch as Bangladesh began to wobble slightly with 5 wickets down.
However, they were always scoring at nearly 5 runs an over and even the introduction of the normally miserly Irish spinners could do little to stem the flow as the very impressive D. Hossain clinically dispatched anything that was loose on his way to a fine innings of 61 not out. He and partner Ahmed saw the Bangladesh side home for a relatively comfortable 5 wicket victory.
The Ireland team were very disappointed with there performance and again their batting proved to be their achilles heel. 140 was just not enough runs when 200 minimum was required to seriously challenge this talented young Bangladesh team.
Ireland 140 off 48 overs (Hugo MacDonnell 53, Ben Wylie 39; Nazeef Ahmed 5-18, Asif Hasan 2-20) lost to Bangladesh 142-5 off 31.5 overs (Didar Hossain 61 not out, Rakin Ahmed 48 not out, Eoghan Conway 3-36) by 5 wickets.
