Pembroke v Dublin University

Pembroke 245/6 in 45 overs beat Dublin University 173/9 all out in 42.3 overs Pembroke won by 82 runs

A good track, and a good forecast greeted the teams for the toss; Trinity called incorrectly, and Pembroke captain Peter Byrne made the decision to bat first. A steady start in the face of good bowling was slightly undone by a succession of wickets, until underage tyros Theo Lawson and Graham McDonnell got together.

These two are well used to batting together and a combination of big shots (McDonnell) and steady strike rotation (Lawson) saw them put on 85 for the 4th wicket. Theo was the man to go after a hard earned 35 and Graham was able to keep his head and take advantage of some poor bowling to be last man out with 108 off only 106 balls. He hit 2 sixes and 11 fours, all around the ground.

An injury to Louis Carpenter after only 6.5 overs left DUCC President John Glynn as emergency sub-fielder and he did the team proud with three direct hits out of three attempts, if you want a job done properly etc.... Extras contributed 37, and with 20 of these in the wides column skipper Mark Lane was hard pressed to keep his side focussed. Ben Dunk bowled 9 good overs for 0/37 and Eoin Delany bowled 9 mediocre ones for 2/58, Greg Withey was somewhere in between with 2/42 off his nine.

In reply for Trinity you felt that much of the likely success of their chase would be based on the performance of Ben Dunk. After a short but productive stay by Eoin Delany, Dunk arrived in the middle and proceeded to hit the bowling all around the park. Using the field restrictions well Trinity were near a run a ball after 10 overs, and a good partnership of 70 between Dunk and Mark Raffery-Skehan (21) left them in with a chance of chasing the target.

The dismissal of Dunk to a good catch behind by Lawson left Trinity with too much to do, and the standard collapse ensued. The main beneficiary of this was Johnno Cooke who bowled 9 overs of spin for 4/24 and the evergreen Bill Whaley with 2/13 off 3.2. A solid performance from Pembroke saw them advance to the Semi Finals of the DGM League.
