Kyle McCallan, Ireland’s most capped cricket player, was present at the Dundonald Asda store for the launch of the Northern Ireland Asda Kwik Cricket competition. Along with local school children from Brooklands Primary School, just some of the year 6 children who will be taking part in this years competition, Kyle showed his support for Northern Ireland’s major year 6 grass roots cricket competition. Kyle is a local to Belfast and balances his Irish Cricket career with teaching in one of Belfast’s schools, and was delighted to be able to get involved with his local community.
The Asda Kwik Cricket competition is a year 6 tournament that is set to involve 130,000 children across Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland. The competition begins on a local level, and successful teams continue to progress through regional finals until ultimately they reach the UK final.
Over 2000 children right across Northern Ireland will be battling it out to be Northern Irish champion and qualify for the UK final which is taking place at a Grace Road county ground in Leicestershire in July.Â
The Northern Ireland final will take place at Stormont on the 20th of June. The Northern Irish Cricket Association will be arranging the events throughout the summer.
The competition will be actively supported by Asda who will be coming down to local competitions, supporting the local schools and children and handing out healthy food and drink on game days.
Asda are attempting to educate the kids about the benefits of eating well and staying active.
Professional cricketers from the UK have put together a healthy eating plan and Asda store staff will be giving a brief talk to pass on the advice from the UK’s best cricket professionals on event days.
A modified format of cricket focusing on the game’s core skills and rules, Kwik Cricket has involved nearly one million children in its structured county, regional and national competitions since it’s inception in 1988.
