Andy Goram suffered a setback in his cricketing comeback yesterday after he was bowled out for just 16 by Sussex Ladies.

The former Scotland goalkeeper made a second appearance for Freuchie in successive days in their centenary celebration match at Muir Road. But Goram's hopes of making a favourable impression by racking up a big score were wrecked on a delivery from England bowler Caroline Atkins.

The former Rangers and Hibs player, who also picked up a collection of cricket caps for his country, was the only home player to be clean bowled by Sussex, who featured six internationals in their line up.

Freuchie shook off the setback, however, to set up a winning tally of 239 for eight in their 40 overs, with Steve Rowley and Scott Galloway each making half centuries.

In reply, Sussex were never in the hunt and they crumbled to 175 all out – Goram taking one for 27. Ebony Rainford-Brent finished the highest scorer with 53.

In the personal duel between former Freuchie man Alan Duncan jnr and his girlfriend Rosalie Birch – another member of England's Ashes squad – the former came out on top.

Duncan, now with the MCC based at Lord's, said: "Naturally there had been lots of banter in the build-up to the match – and as far as I am concerned, the verbals will continue for a while yet. Seriously, it is great for ladies to be competing against men on the cricket pitch on an occasion like this."
