Scotland were last night powering towards an emphatic Intercontinental
Cup triumph over Canada.

Seamer Dewald Nel and spinner Ross Lyons shared a seven-wicket haul as
the hosts were skittled for just 79 in reply to the Scots' first
innings tally of 374.

The Canadians then plunged into even deeper trouble as they finished a
frantic day of action on 36 for two following on - still 259 behind

Dougie Lockhart had carried his score to a career-best 151 to guide
Scotland to their daunting total.

Then Nel and Lyons grabbed the limelight.

The writing was on the wall for Canada when Nel removed Chaudrey
Jabbar with the first delivery of the response.

Scotland's attack never loosened their stranglehold with only one home
batsman able to get past the 10-mark.

Nel took four for 32 in 10 overs, while Lyons weighed in with three
for six in a brilliant nine-over stint.

Jabbar's day of misery was the complete when he was dismissed by Nel
for his second duck of the contest - pouched by Lockhart.

Gordon Drummond then removed Rustum Bhatti to make it 30 for two.

The Scots had begun the second day on 286 for three, thanks mainly to
Dougie Lockhart's patient century.

But they were unable to raise the run-rate during the opening session,
while also surrendering five wickets, including that of Lockhart for
151. And they were all out immediately after lunch.

It had been skipper Fraser Watts' target to pile up a tally
approaching the 500-mark before the tea interval. But it turned out
they had plenty in the bank.

Neil McCallum, who had resumed on 30, added a further 15 before
misjudging a delivery by Sunil Dhaniram.

McCallum shouldered arms, thinking it was destined to drift past the
stumps. But it ducked in at the last moment and clattered the off-stick.

Omer Hussein perished almost immediately when he holed out to Bhatti
off Quaiser Ali for two.

Lockhart plodded on to his 150, but not before he survived a major
scare one short of the milestone.

Majid Haq embarked on an impossible second run - with Lockhart slow to
leave his crease.

It was a simple run-out chance, but the Canadians made a complete hash
of it and Lockhart responded by scampering the single he needed.

Haq was soon to depart for 30, clean bowled by Sami Faridi to leave
Scotland on 359 for six.

And Canada burst right back into the contest by snapping up two more
scalps - including Lockhart's - just before lunch.

After his marathon stint, Lockhart departed in tame fashion for 151,
chipping a return catch to Dhaniram.

He had faced 361 balls and struck 14 boundaries.
