ULSTER BANK LEAGUE SECTION TWO – RELEGATION

Following the results of the past weekend, Dundrum and Saintfield have tied on 24 points in Section Two of the Ulster Bank League. As a result of this, net run rate (NRR) has been employed to determine which of these teams will be relegated to Section Three.

Initial calculations produced the following results:

Saintfield: -0.300
Dundrum: -0.305

These calculations were entirely accurate according to the result forms which were submitted by clubs to the NCU via the Honorary Section Secretary.

However, such was the minimal distance between the teams’ run rates it was considered both Saintfield and Dundrum should submit their scorebooks to the NCU so that these figures could be double-checked.

Upon inspection, it has been discovered that the details of the following matches were incorrectly reported to the NCU by Dundrum CC:

- Dundrum v Armagh, 8 June
- Dundrum v Saintfield, 14 July

In the first match Dundrum reported on the official result form that A Bratten of Armagh bowled 8.5 overs and that the Armagh team bowled 40.5 overs in total. Following checking of both teams' scorebooks, it is clear that A Bratten bowled 7.4 overs and that Armagh bowled 39.4 overs in total.

In the second match Dundrum reported on the official result form that J Wheeler of Saintfield bowled 8.4 overs and that the Saintfield team bowled 30.4 overs in total. Following checking of both teams’ scorebooks, it is clear that J Wheeler bowled 6.4 overs and that Saintfield bowled 28.4 overs in total.

When the NRR calculations were accordingly adjusted, the following NRRs were produced:

Dundrum: -0.290
Saintfield: -0.311

Given that these net run rates reflect what happened on the field of play rather than what was reported in mistaken transcriptions of the scores, they shall stand as the net run rates for the teams in question.

As a result of this, Dundrum will finish in eighth position in Section Two and Saintfield finish in ninth position and are relegated to Section Three for 2009.
