St Johnston Awards Night

After a superb season in which they won no fewer than three domestic trophies, St Johnston Cricet Club recently celebrated their success at a presentation evening at Biddy Friel's restaurant at Drumoghill.

On the night, the three trophies, namely the Sammy Jeffrey, the Sperrin Springs Faughan Valley and the Derry Midweek cups won by Andrew Fleming’s team last season, were on display.  This was no mean feat as the last time the Saints tasted success was back in 1987, when they were the first North-West team to win the Irish senior cup. Amazingly Rene Cole, who played on that Irish senior cup winning side is still playing for the first team.

Guest of honour on the night was North-West umpire and cricket writer, Lawrence Moore. He described Donegal’s only cricket club as a real cricket club where the onus was on hard work, progression and playing for the love of the game. Acknowledging that the club also has major plans for their ground in St. Johnston with a new pavilion and an all weather wicket just two of the main projects in the pipeline, he added “as a club, keep doing what you have been doing and the rest will fall into place.”  He then went on to present the various awards on the night.

The main awards on the night were: 1st X1 Player of the year: David MacBeth, 2nd X1 Player of the year: Anil Kumar, Midweek X1 Player of the year: Ian Macbeth. 1st X1 Bowling: Rammohan Goud, 1st X1 Batting: Alan Macbeth, 2nd X1 Bowling: Anil Kumar, 2nd X1 Batting: Anil Kumar, Club person of the year: Andrew Fleming.
