Ireland went down to a comprehensive 134 run defeat at Trent Bridge against a very strong Nottinghamshire side.

The Midlands side posted their record One Day score against an Irish side bereft of so many of their main strike bowlers - their huge score of 346 for 9 the third highest conceded by Ireland in this format of the game.

That mammoth total was built around a 150 run stand between Alex Hales (106) and the big hitting Ally Brown (89). Brown found the Irish attack very much to his liking, striking 13 fours and 2 sixes in only 57 balls at the crease.

Youngster Hales, playing only his third game was actually the more eye catching of the two, unleashing a wonderful array of attacking shots all around the wicket. His innings of 106 came from just 92 balls, and included 9 fours and a six.

Theer was to be no respite for the Irish with their dismissals, as Adam Voges (48), and Willie Jefferson (57*) saw them reach 346.

All the Irish bowlers suffered, with Kevin O'Brien conceding 52 runs in just 4 overs against the county which he will join later this month. Peter Connell did have the consolation of taking 4 wickets, but at a cost of 71 runs.

Ireland opted for respectability and certainly achieved that, reaching 212 for 9. Andrew White scored an unbeaten 51 from 56 balls, while Jeremy Bray eassed back into the international fold with a well crafted 41.

Andrew Poynter (29), Kevin O'Brien (23) and stand-in skipper Kyle McCallan (21*) all got starts, but against England discard Samit Patel (3-30), and one of the best exponents of the art of one-day bowling, Mark Ealham (4-40), they were always a distant second best.
