Students tri nation challenge at Sunderland
Scotland U19s 192-7 (40 overs, O Hairs 61, E Chalmers 58*, G Dockrell 3-20) lost to Leinster Development XI 195-5 (39.3 overs, R Hopkins 106, A D'Arcy 31) by five wickets.
A brilliant century from Pembroke's Ryan Hopkins helped the youthful Leinster Development XI pull off a shock win against the highly rated Scotland Under 19 side.
16 year old left arm spinner George Dockrell took 3 for 20 as the Scots were restricted to 192 for 7 in their 40 overs. Oliver Hairs (61) and Ewan Chalmers (58*) the only Scottish batsmen of note.
In reply Hopkins was to the fore, striking an incredible 17 boundaries, including one six. The talented all-rounder stroked the ball with great power and placement, impressing the sizeable attendance.
He was given good support by Adrian D'Arcy who made 31 as Leinster won by five wickets with just three balls remaining.
Coach Brian O'Rourke paid tribute to Hopkins saying:" Ryan has clearly benefitted from his time at the LCU's Inidan coaching trip last December. His footwork against the Scottish spinners Keith Morton and Michael Leask was exemplary."
"He took the game to the Scottish attack from ball one, and it was a truly quality innings. This was a great win over a full strength Scottish squad who are using this tournament as a warm up for the World Cup Qualifiers in Jersey next month. It just shows how strong youth cricket is in Leinster at present."
