CYM v Rush
The game started with sea-mist rolling over the ground from the car park side, but Rush, having been put in by CYM, wasted no time in racking up the runs. A brief interruption when the mist got too murky cost an over, but Rush soldiered on. Tipu Gull carried his bat for 90 not out, ably supported by skipper Naseer Shaukat with 47 and Sean Monks with 31. The innings closed on 248/8 after 49 overs. For CYM, Michael Launders, Brad Rasool and Donal Vaughan all took 2 wickets, with Niall McDarby being unlucky to only pick up one wicket.
The Duckworth-Lewis calculations added a solitary run to the total, leaving CY chasing 250 in 49 overs to win. Tight bowling from Rush restricted the scoring opportunities, but CY were never out of it, with Doug Nicol (37) and Brad Rasool (77) to the fore with the bat. Once Rasool departed, unluckily playing the ball onto his foot and then his stumps, the climbing run-rate proved too much for the CYM batters and they were all out in the 47th over for 188. Shahid Iqbal was typically frugal with his figures of 10-3-23-3, supported by Naseer (1-25), Lee Metcalfe (1-19) and Tipu Gull (1-40 off 10). Pick of the bowlers, however, was Lionel Jansen, returning figures of 7-1-25-4.
Merrion v The Hills, Senior League Section A
The Hills 214/8 in 50 overs beat Merrion 183 all out in 47.5 overs by 31 runs.
With an interesting looking track it seemed that the toss would be crucial, so Merrion skipper Jeff Short was delighted to invite Luke Clinton's Hills to bat first. Petrie and Keaveney opened strongly and Bray was to go early in tricky scoring conditions.
So tricky in fact that his opening partner Paddy Byrne faced 41 deliveries, in over 10 overs, before getting off the mark. His perseverance turned out to be the difference between the teams. His 65 plus contributions from Max Sorenson (28), Albert van der Merwe (23) and Michael O'Herlihy (24) left The Hills with a defendable total. Petrie finished with 1/24 off his ten but Keaveney was the pick of the bowlers with 4/22 off his 9 overs.
In reply Kade Beasley capped off a tough day with a first ball duck courtesy of Max Sorenson. Wickets feel at regular intervals with only Ben Ackland (52) and Pradeep Lavang (59) showing enough resistance.
Disciplined bowling performances from Luke Clinton (3/23 off 9), Jeremy Bray (1/28 off 10) and Mike Baumgart (2/39 off 10) allowed Albert van der Merwe to remove all doubt with 3/41 off 8.5 overs.
