Selectors – Ireland women’s cricket

Cricket Ireland is seeking 3 selectors for the Ireland women’s senior and A teams. Selectors will form a selection panel constituted as detailed below.

BACKGROUND: Aim of Cricket Ireland – Women

Goal: Become ranked #6 in the world by 2015.

The Irish women’s senior cricket team aims to be ranked #6 in the world by 2015. Irish women are therefore targeting the world cup in 2013 to raise the current ranking from 9 to 6. The world cup in 2013 is therefore the key milestone in terms of world ranking. Incremental targets in achieving this goal of being 6th in the world include:

  • 2010 - Gaining a 4th place in the Dubai Cricket Classic in 2010 (tournament for countries in the world ranked 5 to 10)
  • 2011 - Qualifying for WC 2013 with a number 1 or 2 placing in ICC WCQ
  • 2012 - Gaining a top 3 placing Dubai Cricket Classic in 2010 (placing in top 3 in this tournament for countries ranked 5 to 10)
  • 2013 - Gaining a ranking of 6 in women’s WC in India

Further key objectives for Women’s cricket include:

  • Increase the participation in women’s cricket by 30% by 2010
  • Women’s cricket to be recognised as an exciting and growing sport in Ireland
  • Operate on a break-even basis

These will be achieved by:

  • Broadening the base across a range of areas, namely club membership, club affiliation, coaching, umpiring, scoring, volunteer roles
  • A Grass roots awareness campaign - growth through Schools participation
  • Developing a player pathway for girls and women
  • Providing sufficient opportunities to compete at the highest level consistently
  • Securing funding
  • Promoting equity
  • Ensuring strong relationships

Selectors – Ireland women’s cricket

Tenure:

Selectors will be appointed for a 3 year term and will be confirmed annually. The selection committee will be confirmed annually at the November cricket committee meeting. Members of the selection committee may stand for more than 1 term. Selectors will be drawn from the stakeholders of women’s cricket and may be former international or interprovincial players, or former / current scorers, umpires, coaches other appropriate appointees. Selectors may not be players who are eligible for selection to the Ireland women’s squads.

What’s involved?

Selectors should be available to attend sufficient senior women’s club, inter provincial and international cricket fixtures throughout the season in order to make sound selection decisions. Irish Selectors should be available to

  • Attend women’s league games in which squad members are involved.
  • Attend LCU men’s league matches where Senior Ireland women are playing.
  • Attend home international matches. It is expected that selectors will cooperate to ensure sufficient coverage of senior women’s cricket fixtures. To that end selectors will liaise with the coach and other Irish selector or ask a senior player to report back on any particular player(s).

Selection Panel

The selection panel will consist of members comprised of

  • Senior team Coach
  • 1 representative from each of the following regions where sufficient senior cricket is played 
  • Ulster
  • North Leinster
  • South Leinster
  • Munster
  • Connaught

The Ireland A and Ireland senior team coaches, while in office, may not be nominated as regional selectors. Selectors should not be an immediate relative of a squad member.

1.1. Chair of Selectors

The Chair of selectors will be nominated by Cricket Ireland from the panel. It is expected that the number of selectors be restricted to a maximum of 4. The selectors, apart from the coach, shall be the same for the Ireland Senior Women and the Ireland A squads and teams. The selection panel shall make selection decisions for

  • Pre season international squads
  • Tournament International squads
  • Interprovincial squads

1.2. In tournament selection – at home / away

Selection of teams for a match once a tournament has started will be made by the selection panel. The captain will be asked to input into the selection process. For away tournaments if selectors are not present the team will be selected by Coach and captain.
