A third-career century by Qasim Sheikh accompanied a fine innings by Richie Berrington put Scotland in a commanding position against Kenya after day two of the ICC Intercontinental Cup 2009-2010 match at Nairobi Gymkhana in Nairobi on Tuesday.

Sheikh scored a brilliant 108 and Berrington scored 80 as the 2005 champion resumed its first innings at the overnight score of 121-3 and was bowled out for 306 while replying to the home side’s modest score of 91.

While the stumps were drawn for the day, Kenya had reached 30-1 and still needed 185 runs to make the visitors bat again.

Sheikh resumed this morning at the overnight score of 56 while Berrington started the day at seven and the two batsmen took the score to 208 before Sheikh became Steve Tikolo’s only success of the innings. Sheikh received 228 deliveries and hit 19 fours before he was declared lbw. He added 102 runs for the fourth wicket with Berrington.

Sheikh’s departure triggered a sensational collapse as Scotland lost its last seven wickets for 98 runs with no batsmen except Berrington offering any significant resistance against some disciplined and purposeful Kenya bowling.

Berrington struck seven fours in a 206-ball innings before being the eighth batsmen out. Together with number-nine batsman Ross Lyons (23), Berrington put on 58 runs for the eighth wicket at a stage when the tourists had slumped from 208-3 to 233-7.

The pick of the Kenya bowlers was Nehemiah Odhiambo with 3-60 while Kamande took 2-31 and Elijah Otieno claimed 2-46.

Kenya started its second-innings, trailing by 215 runs on first-innings and had reached 30-1 when play ended on the second day with Rakep Patel unbeaten on 16 and Hiren Varaiya on one.

Seren Waters was the batsman out when he was trapped in front of the wickets by Dewald Nel for 12.

With six points already in the bag for claiming a first-innings lead, Scotland’s bowlers will be aiming to demolish the Kenya batting line-up for the second time in the match which will earn them additional 14 match-win points.
