Uganda will be going into today's T20 match against Scotland in Nairobi determined to put aside the eight-wicket drubbing they received yesterday at the hands of Kenya.
Having got off to a ripping start with openers Roger Mukasa and Arthur Kyobe taking 25 runs off the first three overs without loss, their demise on 31 (Kyobe 6, Mukasasa 22, both lbw) dried up the scoring rate as captain Akbar Baig spent 13 overs at the crease, scoring 23 out of 70.
When Baig was sixth out at 100, after a brief cameo by Frank Nsubuga (22), who was put down by Alex Obanda on one, only three overs remained.
Ivan Thawi, vice-captain Davis Arinaitwe and newcomer Deus Muhumza did their best to attack but 123 was never going to be competitive score.
For Kenya Jimmy Kamande, one with his first ball, Nehemiah Odhiambo, Shem Obado and Hiren Varaiya each bagged two wickets, Varaiya's including a wicket maiden - almost unheard of in T20 cricket.
From the moment Steve Tikolo came to the crease opening for Kenya with David Obuya, he imposed his authority on the game. Splendid shots all round the wicket, from both batsmen, got them almost to the halfway point before Obuya was well caught at mid-on by Baig off Arinaitwe for 24.
But Tikolo, aided now by a punitive Alex Obanda, kept up the pressure, passing 50 before being out for 63 on 114, well held at long-on from a skyer to Thawi off the persevering Muhumza.
Tikolo had once again showed class, where elsewhere it was sporadic. Obanda, who had been joined by captain/wicketkeeper Morris Ouma, hit the winning four to finish on 31 not out.
Uganda: 123 for 9 (Varaiya 4-1-9-2); Kenya: 127 for 2 (Tikolo 63).
