Junior Cup 2nd round preview
The Second Round of the competition, sponsored by Goldblatt McGuigan, will be played on Saturday and the main talking point is surely Academy’s bid to equal Downpatrick II’S achievement in the early 1970s of winning the trophy three years in a row. Mark Shields’s side successfully negotiated a potential “banana skin” in Round 1 at Larne when club stalwart Davy Greenlees produced a match winning innings of 84 in a victory over a gallant Larne side by 26 runs. The Cup holders must travel again this time to Ballymena where new captain Neil Fullerton is sure to have his troops well prepared.
Last year’s beaten finalists Waringstown II again led by Geoffrey Heyburn will fancy their chances to go one better this time and they made a confident start in ousting Lisburn II in the First Round. Their massive total of 318/7 was built on a tremendous opening partnership of 163 between 17 year old
Having beaten near neighbours Ards in Round 1 Bangor II have another local derby match when they travel to Comber to take on North Down II. Billy Adams’s side won the trophy in 2006 and chalked up a mammoth total of 382 in the first round, winning by 220 runs against BISC but this promises to be a close contest.
Newly promoted to Section 2 this season Dungannon must also be regarded as possible winners of the prestigious trophy and they begin their challenge with a home tie against Millpark also of Section 2. The visitors have former Waringstown player Stuart Kidd in their ranks this season and will make a bold bid for victory.
